BOLLYWOO
• The name BOLLYWOOD inspired by TOLLYWOOD the
name that was used to refer to the cinema of West
Bengal.
• In 1932 TOLLYWOOD was the earliest HOLLYWOOD
inspired name because the Bengali Film Industry was
based on Tollygunge.
• Indian Cinema has passed through 11 decades of
entertainment, songs, love in the rain, exotic locations,
“mere paas maa hai”, on screen kissing and much more.
The growth in the terms of impact and quality has been
tremendous in the last 110 years. Cinema has now
become an inevitable part of the Indian culture and
society, which a SRK or a BIG B wannabe in every nook
and corner of this great country.
CONTRIBUTION TO INDIAN CINEMA
• First Indian film was made in 1899 by Calcutta based
Mr. Harishchandra Sakharam Bhatavdekar. He, using
a projection apparatus and an imported British
camera made two short films namely : The Wrestlers
and Man and Monkey.
• The first indigenous full-length feature film was made
by Dundiraj Govinda Phalke, who is better known as
Dada Saheb Phalke. The film was titled ‘Raja
Harishchandra’ and was released on May 3, 1914 at
the coronation theatre, Bombay. The film ran for 23
days.
• Phalke’s ‘Lanka Dahan’, which came out in 1917,
went on to become India’s first box office hit.
CONTRIBUTION TO INDIAN CINEMA
• India made its first talkie in 1931. ‘Alam Ara’ was the
first full length indigenously made talkie film, which
was produced by imperial films and was directed by
Ardeshir Irani. It also contained seven songs and was
released on March 14, 1931, Bombay’s Majestic
cinema.
• In 1937 Ardeshir Irani made the first Colour Film in
Hindi : ‘Kisan Kanya’
• Dada Saheb Phalke’s contribution to Indian cinema
was tremendous and hence, Dada Saheb Phalke
Lifetime Achievement Awards were started in his
honour in 1969.Devika Rani, Grand daughter of
Rabindra Tagore, won the first award.
Bollywood earnings
• Even though Bollywood may account for only 2% of the
worldwide box office currently, it is expected to more than
double its share of the global market in the years to come.
• Bollywood revenues would rise from $1.5 billion in 2006 to
$3.4 billion by 2010, thanks to the growth of multiplexes
• Bollywood is the biggest film industry in the world in terms
of number of viewers, with an audience of more than 3
billion compared with Hollywood’s 2.6 billion globally.
• Bollywood revenues are growing by 20%-25% every year.

1965 in New Delhi, India. He married Gauri Khan on
25 October 1991. They have two children, son Aryan
Khan (b. 1997) and daughter Suhana (b. 2000). Khan
started out his career appearing in several television
serials in the late 1980s.

KICK STARTING HIS CAREER
• His career actually started out in the year 1988 with the
super hit TV series Fauji. What followed after that was
another successful TV series called Circus in 1989. So his
acting career started with a bang on the small screen and
with a bigger bang on the big screen with his first film titled
‘Deewana’ co starring Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti in the
year 1992. He won the Filmfare award for best debut for that
film as well.He confirmed his foothold in the industry with his
film ‘Baazigar’ where he played a negative role. It was
almost like with that film Shah Rukh made a statement loud
and clear that he was here to stay. After negative
performances in films like ‘Baazigar’ and Yash Chopra’s
‘Darr’ he went ahead and did an absolute light hearted film
like ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na’. Till today many believe that film
was one of Khan’s best till date. He also won the critics
award for that film.
REACHING NEW HEIGHTS
• He came into the A league with Aditya Chopra’s
directorial debut ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ that has
till date been one of the biggest Bollywood blockbusters
in the history of Indian cinema. He got both critical as
well as commercial success for the film.
• Followed by Karan Johar’s directorial Debut ‘Kuch Kuch
Hota Hai’ in 1998 which went on to be the biggest hit of
that year. Shah Rukh starred opposite Kajol and Rani
Mukherjee in that film, Salman Khan also had a guest
appearance. After this film it was like Shah Rukh was not
just a star anymore, he was one of the most sought after
superstars of all times. He had fans not only in India but
overseas as well, and a fan base that was growing
rapidly. The Year 2000 saw a clash of the titans where
the Baadshah and the Shahenshah of Bollywood came
together to make history in Mohabbatein.2001 brought
them together once again in Karan Johar’s next larger
than life film ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’.
NEW AVENUES
• Shah Rukh also started his own production house
in partnership with Juhi Chawla called Dreamz
Unlimited but alas their first film as producers
titled ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’ flopped at the
box office.
DIE HARD ROMANTIC
• Shah Rukh was known to be one of the best
romantics that Bollywood had ever seen, and in
2002 with his heart rending performance as the
drunken lover in ‘Devdas’ he proved beyond a
doubt that he is the best there is, was and would
be for a long time. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s award
winning saga called ‘Devdas’ took Shah Rukh also
known as King Khan to a new level altogether. The
film was inspired from Sarat Chandra
Chattopadhyay's renowned novel titled Devdas as
well.
SWEET TASTE OF SUCCESS
• Another huge hit in the form of Karan Johar’s Kal Ho
Na Ho that was directed by Nikhil Advani. The film
was inspired by the Amitabh Bachchan Rajesh
Khanna starrer ‘Anand’.
• He started another production company called ‘Red
Chillies Entertainment’ in 2004 with Farah Khan
directing her first film titled ‘Main Hoon Na’. The
film was a hit and so was Shah Rukh’s next film
with Yash Raj opposite Preity Zinta called Veer-
Zarra. As was expected Shah Rukh once again won
many an award for the film.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE
• In 2006 Karan Johar released his third film with
Shah Rukh Khan titled ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’.
• 2007 saw Shah Rukh as the new host of Kaun
Banega Crorepati’s third season taking over
where Amitabh Bachchan had left off.
• Yash Chopra’s ‘Chak De India’ and Farah Khan’s
‘Om Shanti Om’. Both films went on to be super
duper hits. ‘Chak De India’ got Shah Rukh all the
awards where as OSO got him huge collections.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE

• 2008 has seen the king in a new avatar as the host of


another game show, only this time with little kids
called ‘Kya Aap Panchvi Paas Se Tez Hain?’
• The next two big hits are ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ by
Yash Chopra & ‘My Name Is Khan’ by Karan Johar.
• Shah Rukh along with Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya
Rai and Salman Khan also has his statue at the world
famous wax museum Madame Tussauds in the United
Kingdom which was set up in 2007.
RED CHILLIES ENTERTAINMENTS
• Founded in 2002 as a film production house, Red Chillies
Entertainments has branched itself into other spheres of
production, starting from setting up a path breaking Special
Effects studio, VFX, which brought Hollywood's slick
sophistication to Indian cinema.
• The desire to amalgamate entertainment with sports is Red
Chillies's way of investing in a resurgent India where the
future beckons with new sporting careers. This desire led to
the conception of The Kolkata Knight Riders in the much
hyped Indian Premier League (IPL).
• Profit Earned by KKR is more than 26 Crores till date

• Shah Rukh Khan who is estimated to be worth Rs.
2500 crores is part of the global elite. Call him Shah
Rukh Khan, SRK or even King Khan he is the
biggest brand in himself. His go-getter attitude has
