VELOCITY

Concepts:
Velocity described as an objects rate
and direction of motion. Thus, velocity is
speed with direction. Considering that
velocity specifies direction, it is considered as
a vector quantity.
Velocity uses the concept of displacement
and time rather than distance and time.

In equation, it is expressed as:

velocity = displacement
elapsed time
In symbols, it is expressed as:
v = d/t

Sample Problem:
1.) A car moving towards east travelled a
distance of 122 km in 2.5 h. What is the cars
velocity?
2.) A bus is bound towards north on its trip.
The destination of the passengers is
approximately about 452 km. Such distance
will take about 6 h. What will be the velocity
of the bus on its trip?
AVERAGE
SPEED
Concepts:
Average Speed described as the
total distance travelled divided by the
total time of travel. It represents the
speed of the participant throughout his
or her travel.

In equation:
Average speed = total distance
travelled
total time of travel
In symbols,
vave = dT/tT
Sample problem for Average speed:
1. When you ride your bicycle for a
distance of 2km, you start from a speed
of 0 km/h. This increases to, say 20
km/h. You then slow down to 15 km/h
as you climb a steep road then speed
up again as you pass by a level road.
You stop for a while at sari sari store
to sip a bottle of soft drink then you
speed up again, then move at constant
speed. Finally, as you get near your
destination, you slow down and then
stop. If you have spent 20 minutes in
. 2. You and your barkada took a car
trip. You travel for an hour at 60 km/h
and then for 2 h at 40 km/h. What is
the average speed during this trip?

Solve the ff.

3.) An airplane travels from Manila to
Cebu. It covers a distance of about 600
km in 50 min. Determine the airplanes
average speed in km/h.
4.) Your family is set for an out of town
trip to two popular destinations. For
destination A, you travelled for 1.4 h at
Uniform Motion:
Constant Speed or Uniform Velocity

An object is said to be moving at a constant

speed or uniform velocity when;
a.) The object is neither slowing down or
speeding up.
b.) The object is travelling along a straight
line or path and its direction does not change
at all.
c.) The object covers equal distances at equal
intervals of time.

INSTANTANEOUS
SPEED
OR
INSTANTANEOUS
VELOCITY
Concepts:
Instantaneous speed refers to the speed
of a moving object at a given instance of
time.Instantaneous speed describes the
actual speed of a moving object as it travels.
Instantaneous speed tells the variation of
speeds of the moving object.
The device used to measure the
instantaneous speed or velocity of a vehicle is
called speedometer. The speedometer in
every car has an odometer that records the
distance traveled.
Instantaneous Speeds of a Moving Vehicle
Time (s) Instantaneous Speed
(m/s)
0 10.0
5 8.00
10 21.0
15 15.0
20 18.0
If the time intervals for the instantaneous speed
are equal, we can calculate the average speed
using the equation:

average speed = sum of instantaneous speed

number of instantaneous
speed

Computation:

vave = 10.0 m/s+ 8.00 m/s+ 21.0 m/s +15.0 m/s+

18.0 m/s
5
Vave = 72.0 m/s
5
Vave = 14.4 m/s
Computation:
A bus traveling along a highway has the following
instantaneous speeds taken every 30 second time
interval: 6.00 m/s, 7.00 m/s, 8.00 m/s, and 10.0m/s.
What is the average speed of the bus during the 2
minute interval?
