Urine Transportation,

Storage and
Elimintation
Elisha Krizel V. Torres
URETER

25-30 cm (10-12inches) long, thick-

walled and are retroperitoneal.
Transports urine from the renal
pelvis of one kidney to the urinary
bladder.

Peristalsis is the process wherein the

muscular walls of the ureters push
urine towards the urinary bladder.
Anatomy of the Ureters,
Urinary Bladder and Urethra
Peritoneum
holds urinary bladder in place
Trigone
smooth triangular region of the internal urinary
bladder formed by the two ureteral orifices and
the internal urethral orifice

Internal Urethral Orifice

opening in the urinary bladder into the urethra

External Urethral Orifice

opening of urethra to outside
Rugae
allow expansion of urinary bladder as it fills

Detrusor Muscle
Contracts to push urine into urethra

Internal Urethral Sphincter

involuntary controls opening & closing of the urethra

External Urethral Sphincter

voluntarily controls opening & closing of urethra
Adventitia

layer of areolar connective tissue

continuous with the ureters

Serosa
superior surface of the urinary bladder
layer of visceral peritoneum
3 Layers of tissue that form
the wall of the Ureters
Mucosa

Deepest coat
mucous membrane
with transitional
epithelium and
underlying lamina
propria of areolar
connective tissue
with collagen,
elastic fibres &
lymphatic tissue
Transitional Epithelium
is able to stretch (organ must
accommodate a variable volume
of fluid)
Mucous
secreted by the goblet cells
preventsthe cells from coming in
contact with urine
Muscularis

iIntermediate
Coat
Composed of
inner
longitudinal & Adventitia
outer circular Superficial coat
layers of layer of areolar
smooth muscle connective tissue
fibers.
Function:
URINARY BLADDER
Hollow, distensible muscular organ
In MALES, it is directly anterior to the rectum
In FEMALES, it is anterior to the vagina & inferior
to the uterus
Empty = collapses
as urine volume increases,
it becomes pear-shaped &
rises into the abdominal
cavity.
Capacity: average of 700 to
800 mL.
MICTURATION REFLEX
Micturation

discharge of urine from the urinary

bladder
also known as Urination or Voiding
occurs via a combination of
involuntary and voluntary muscle
contractions.
Urethra

passageway for discharging urine

from the body

In males, it discharges semen.

the length and passage through the
body are different than in females.
MALE Urethra

consists
of deep mucosa & superficial
muscularis

subdivided into:
Prostatic Urethra (passes through the prostate)
Intermediate (Membranous) Urethra (Shortest
portion, passes through the deep muscles of
the perineum)
Spongy Urethra (Longest portion, passes
through the penis)
MALE Urethra

Circular fibers help form the

internal urethral sphincter of the
urinary bladder
Skeletal Muscle Fibers help form
the external urethral sphincter
Prostatic Urethra
Contains the openings of
ducts that transport secretions from the
prostate
seminal vesicles & ductus (vas ) deferens
Bulbourethral Glands
also known as Cowpers Glands
deliver an alkaline substance prior to
ejaculation that neutralises the
acidity of the urethra
Opening of the ducts of
urethral glands
discharge mucous during sexual
arousal & ejaculation.
FEMALE Urethra
liesdirectly posterior to the pubic
symphysis
length: 4cm (1.5 inches)
External Urethral Orifice
between the clitoris & vaginal opening

Wall of the Female Urethra

deep
mucosa & superficial
muscularis
