By the end of the course, students should:

be aware of what makes a successful academic presentation,

be more confident about giving academic presentations,

be able to use a range of commonly used words and phrases

that make a presentation easier to follow,

be able to use visual aids in ways that enhance the delivery of

content, and

be aware of any language areas that may need further work.

 Before we start

Fear (anxiety) is enemy number one for any presentation.

Fear is a normal physiological response.
Everyone has a certain amount of stage fright.
Think positively about the event.
Dont panic and prepare well.

 Relaxing Techniques
Prepare. Visualize your success.
Practice. Practice positive self-talk.
Memorize your opening. Exercise lightly and breathe deeply
before you speak.
Pause.
Realize you dont look as nervous as
Know your audience.
you feel.
Know your venue. Claim the three audience truths.
One: They believe youre the expert,
so dont tell them otherwise.
Two: They want you to succeed, so
theyre on your side.
Three: They wont know when you
Smile. make a mistake, so dont announce it.

 Features of Bad Presentation
Crowded slide.

Too much visual aids.

Speaking too quickly.

Going off-point.

Going into too much detail.

Not knowing when to stop (answering questions particularly).

Monotone.

Many ummmm and ahhhhh.
