Vertical Take Off and

Landing
OBJECTIVE
The objective is to build a RC aeroplane capable
of vertical take off and landing and taking
photographs.

The design would be semi-autonomous as the

plane would require human controlled take off
and landing using a standard RC radio controller.

Upon getting sufficiently close to the target, the

plane would begin triggering the camera to take
photos and store them on an onboard SD card.
Advantages
VTOL aircraft are characterized by a comparatively simpler
structure and more efficient aerodynamics that provide the
advantage of longer flight durations at higher speeds.

It has the ability for Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL)

and hover and perform agile maneuvering.

Unlike a helicopter with a single giant rotor that is

unsafeto use by a civilian user, a VTOLcan be made to be
much safer, easier to use and can be set up to
accommodate strong / uneven wind and loading
conditions.
APPLICATION
Intended applications for the project include Aerial Photography,
Geographic Surveying and Search and Rescue Aid.

Precision agriculture for optimum utilisation of resources.

Pipeline Monitoring for leakage and pilferage detection.

Railway Track Monitoring for cracks and sabotage detection.

Road Construction Progressmonitoring.

Surveillance of the mining area, lease boundary inspection, inspection of

safety zone, counting vegetation in reclaimed area and quarry and dump
profiling for volume calculations.

Better endurance, range and versatility than a quad copter.

Agriculture
With the current trend towards increasing farm size, it is also becoming
more costly to acquire larger datasets to assess field variability.

The ultra-high spatial resolution (e.g. centimeters), relatively low

operational costs, and the near real-time image acquisition would indicate
that these platforms are ideal tools for mapping and monitoring in PA.

The majority of crop growth and crop yield models require an estimate of
Leaf Area Index (LAI) of the crop canopies. Other estimated
measurements using remote sensing data include surface soil properties,
water stress, vegetation cover, nitrogen content, crop height, above
ground biomass, crop yield, and crop species.

In particular, vegetation indices such as the Normalized Difference

Vegetation Index (NDVI), the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), and
the Green NDVI, have been used extensively to study various biological
parameters quantitatively.
