Social groups
The biggest group in South Africa is the Zulu people. They make up 21% of the population.
They mainly reside in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The Zulus were treated very harshly
during the British regime. They were forced to become citizens of KwaZulu, therefore
losing their South African citizenship. They speak isiZulu, which is the most widely spoken
language across South Africa. Most would claim Christianity as their religion.
The next group is the Xhosa people. These people fall under many different tribes, mainly
residing in the Eastern Cape and in the southern border. Like the Zulus, they were denied
citizenship during apartheid. However, they were allowed self-governing homelands. THeir
language, also named Xhosa, is the second most spoken language across the country,
after Zulu. They have a strong oral tradition, telling many tales of great heroes.

Form of Government
South Africas government is a constitutional republic, which is the same as
the U.S. This means that the officials are elected as representatives for the
people. They govern according to constitutional law that limits the power over the
people. It is like this so the government cannot completely control the people. The
current president is Jacob Zuma. He is the 4th president, and assumed office May
9th, 2009. He was a well respected leader up until March 2016 where the South
African highest court ruled that he had violated the constitution by failing to repay
the government the money that was given to him to upgrade his private residence.
Despite this, Zuma has been a good president, having fought against apartheid
and helping it end. Overall, South Africa has a well balanced government with a
somewhat controversial leader

Art
South Africa has gone through a few art
movements through the years. During the early
colonial era, artists would paint what they saw as
the new world in detail. Then during the 19th
century, artists like Irma Stern and Maggie
Laubscher brought the techniques of post-
impressionism and expressionism to South
African art. During the Apartheid years, there was
a great diversity in the arts, ranging from
landscape painting to abstract art. Overall, South
Africa has experienced many different art forms
over the years, and it is still changing to this day.
