    Hugo Distler was a German composer, organist, and conductor born in 1908 in Nuremberg, Germany. He studied conducting, piano, composition, and organ at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1927-1931. In 1931 he became the organist and director of music at St. Jacob's Church in Lübeck. His music was inspired by composers like Schütz and Lechner and featured polyphonic, melismatic styles within a tonal framework. However, the Nazis deemed his music "degenerate" for being too modern, dissonant, and Lutheran. Distler took his own life in 1942 after being asked to join the German army.
