DICTOGLOSS
DENTIST VS DENTAL LAB TECHNICIAN
Dental laboratory technology is the art and science of designing and
manufacturing corrective devices and replacements of natural teeth.

A dental laboratory technician communicates and collaborates with the

dentist to plan, design and make dental prostheses for individual patients.

The dentist is responsible for providing dental technician with a prescription

detailing final treatment choice and for placement of restorative or corrective
device in the patients mouth.
The dental technician aids the dentist in material choices and case design
and is responsible for building up the final prostheses or corrective devices.

Creating aesthetic dental prostheses and working to improve the patients

smile, the dental laboratory technician influences not only patients physical
and dental health but also improves their self-confidence and self-esteem.

DENTAL EQUIPMENT

ARTICULATORS
They are mechanical devices working as the upper and lower
jaws and reproducing their movements and links. We know
four types of ARTICULATORS:

1)TO CREATE CASTS FOR STORAGE OR TO RELINE FULL

DENTURES

2) TO MAKE MINOR WORKS OR DENTURES

3) TO MANUFACTURE MOST TYPES OF PROSTHESES

4)TO BE USED FOR TOTAL REHABILITATION PROSTHESES AND

TO ANALYZE AND SOLVE GNATHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS
DENTAL CURING LIGHT
Adental curing lightis a piece of dental
equipment that is used for polymerization of light
cureresin based composites. It can be used on
several different dental materials that are curable
by light. The light used falls under the visible blue
light spectrum. This light is delivered over a range
of wavelengths and varies for each type of device.
There are four basic types of dental curing lights;
Tungsten halogen,light-emitting diode(LED),
plasma arc curing (PAC), and laser. The two main
dental curing lights are the halogen and LED.
MATERIALS
IMPRESSION MATERIALS

CASTING MATERIALS
IMPRESSION MATERIALS
IMPORTANT WHEN CREATING PROSTHESES

Elastic materials are used because they are more

precise and can be used with undercuts.
They can be divided into two sub-categories:

HYDROCOLLOIDS
ELASTOMERIC IMPRESSION MATERIALS
Among HYDROCOLLOIDS, Alginate hydrocolloids are used for
preliminary impressions (alginate impression). They change colour
when they harden.

Alginate is an elastic, irreversible hydrocolloid impression

material. Irreversible hydrocolloid impressions form an inseparable
part of indirect restorations. Alginate is one of the most frequently
used dental materials; and alginate impression is a simple, cost-
effective, and indispensable part of dental practice.
The most popular form of alginate is supplied as a powder, which
is mixed with water. Many alginates are supplied with a reaction
indicator that changes color of the impression when the material
is set; and presently, dustless alginates are preferred.

Among elastomeric impression materials, the most common in the

lab for
Matrixes are condensation silicones.
WHAT ARE CASTS?
Casts are accurate, three-dimensional replicas
of a patients teeth which are made by
pouring dental plaster or acrylic into
impressions (imprints, or molds) of the teeth,
and allowing it to harden. Casts can be
created from many types of dental stone,
metal or plastic, depending on the intended
use and the durability requirements of the
cast.
CASTING MATERIALS
GYPSUM PLASTER = A DRY POWDER PRODUCED BY
HEATING GYPSUM

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLASTER:

TYPE1: IMPRESSION PLASTER

TYPE2: PLASTER used for minor works (mounting casts

in articulators or making flask muffles)

TYPE3: STONE (USED FOR ALL THE CASTS)

TYPE4: EXTRA STONE (used for casts having dies)

http://pocketdentistry.com/impression-materials/ (STUDY MATERIAL)

When plaster or stone is poured into the

impression and hardened, the replica that
is formed is a positive reproduction of the
teeth and tissues . The replica is called
acastormodel.
