Iron metal exhibits two oxidation states ,2+
and 3+.
Fe2+ ions can be converted to Fe3+ by
oxidation reaction.

Potassium manganate(VII) is an oxidising
agent that can oxidise Fe2+ions to Fe3+ ions.
A) When acidified potassium manganate (VII)
solution is added to a solution of iron (II)salt,
decolourisation occurs. MnO4- ions are
reduced to Mn2+ ions while Fe2+ ions which is
pale yellow are oxidised to Fe3+ ions (brown).

Sodium Hydroxide solution
The formation of Fe3+ ions can be
confirmed by using sodium hydroxide
solution.
When sodium hydroxide solution is
added to the reaction product, a
brown precipitate of iron (III)
hydroxide, Fe(OH)3, insoluble in
excess NaOH(aq) is obtained.
Other Oxidising agents
A) Chlorine gas or chlorine water
Cl2(aq)+2Fe2+(aq) 2Fe3+(aq)+2Cl-(aq)
B) Liquid Bromine
Br2(l)+2Fe2+(aq) 2Fe3+(aq)+2Br-(aq)
C) Acidified potassium dichromate(VI) solution
Cr2O7 2-(aq)+14H+(aq)+6Fe2+(aq) 6Fe3+
(aq)+2Cr3+(aq)+7H2O(l)
D) Concentrated nitric acid
HNO3(aq)+3Fe2+(aq)+3H+(aq) 3Fe3+
(aq)+2H2O(l)+NO(g)
E)Acidified hydrogen peroxide
H2O(aq)+2H+(aq)+2Fe2+(aq) 2Fe3+
+2H2O(l)
Experiment
Conversion of Fe2+ions to Fe3+ Ions
Materials and apparatus: Test
tubes,droppers,FeSO4,KmO4,FeCl,dilute
H2SO4,Na2SO3 and dilute NaOH solution
Procedure: 1.About 2 cm3 of iron(II) sulphate solution
is poured into a test tube.
2)About 2cm3 of pottasium manganate(VII) solution is
poured into another test tube, followed by about 2cm3
of dilute sulphuric acid.
3) Using a dropper, about 2cm3 of the acidified
potassiummanganate(VII) solution is added slowly to the
iron (II) sulphat solution, The mixture is shaken gently.
Observation
FeSO4(aq)- a)test with acidified
KMnO4
-The light green iron(II)sulphate
changes to yellow
-The purple colour of acidified KMnO4
solution turns colourless.
B) Add excess NaOH(aq)
-A brown precipitate, insoluble in
excess NaOH(aq) is formed.
