Bicycle Day(19th of April) does not, as one might
expect, celebrate the ubiquitous two-wheeled mode of
transport, beloved of city- and country- dwellers alike the
world over. Rather, it celebrates a historical trip involving
a certain Swiss chemist X and a bicycle, that occurred on
19th April, 1943.
X was working in Sandoz labs, trying to develop a
compound to prevent the death of women in childbirth.
The compound, later sold as "Delysid" by Sandoz, was
one of many synthetic molecules created in the
chemists quest to prevent post-partum haemorrhaging.
ID X, and explain what happened on Bicycle Day.
Answer THE FIRST ACID TRIP
On April 19, 1943, Hofmann performed a self-experiment to determine the
true effects of LSD, intentionally ingesting 0.25 milligrams (250
micrograms) of the substance.
He asked his laboratory assistant to escort him home and they made the
journey on a bicycle. On the way, Hofmann's condition rapidly deteriorated
as he struggled with feelings of anxiety, alternating in his beliefs that the
next-door neighbor was a malevolent witch, that he was going insane, and
that the LSD had poisoned him. When the house doctor arrived, however,
he could detect no physical abnormalities.
Hofmann was reassured, and soon his terror began to give way to a sense
of good fortune and enjoyment, as he later wrote...
"... Little by little I could begin to enjoy the unprecedented colors and plays of
shapes that persisted behind my closed eyes. Kaleidoscopic, fantastic images
surged in on me, alternating, variegated, opening and then closing themselves
in circles and spirals, exploding in colored fountains, rearranging and
hybridizing themselves in constant flux ..."
The events of the first LSD trip, now known as Bicycle Day, after the
bicycle ride home, proved to Hofmann that he had indeed made a
significant discovery: apsychoactivesubstance with extraordinary potency,
capable of causing significant shifts of consciousness in incredibly low

To X, Ys [theory] was particularly sterile when compared with the diversity of
the world. Nowhere in the natural world do we see the flat, idealized, geometric
figures of Y.
The theory of higher dimensions was introduced when X gave his celebrated

From an article titled The Vexing Legacy of X
The legendary Stanford psychologist helped hundreds of gifted
children and showed America its okay to be smart.
X was gathering evidence to squelch the popular stereotype of
brainy, bookish children as frail oddballs He wanted to show
that most smart kids were robust and well adjusted.
He identified a core group of 643 children with IQs 135 or higher.
These were enrolled in his study, The Genetic Study of Genius.
Y was considered for enrolment in the study, but failed to make
the cut, scoring 125. Later in life Y would often joke about how he
could not qualify for the study but could still win a Nobel Prize in
physics. Y is known for his work with transistors, and had a crucial
role in making Silicon Valley the hotbed of electronics innovation.

Answer
Medical categories of people with severe
intellectual disabilities.
In the early 1900s, Dr Henry Goddard created a
classification system for intellectual disability
based on the concept of mental age and IQ. The
term idiot referred to people with an IQ below
25, imbecile referred to IQ 26-50, and moron
was IQ 51-70. This classification initially gained
adoption amongst psychologists, although it is
now considered derogatory.

After graduation, X spent time in Europe and had the opportunity to meet Y
in Vienna.
In an autobiographical piece, X relays the story of the meeting, explaining
that he told Y of a boy he met on the train. The boy appeared afraid of dirt,
even when his mother tried to reassure him. X speculated that the boy had
obtained this phobia from his mother, who seemed to be highly
domineering.
Y responded to Xs story by saying, And was the little boy you?
X experienced Y's attempt to reduce this small bit of observed interaction
to some unconscious episode from his own remote childhood as dismissive
of his current motivations, intentions, and experience.

It served as a reminder thatpsychoanalysistends to dig too deeply into

both the past and the unconscious, overlooking in the process the reputedly
more important conscious and immediate aspects of experience, and would
play an important role for X to develop his own theory.
