pumps:-

PUMPS

The pump is a mechanical device which conveys liquid from one place to another place. It can be defined as hydraulic machines which converts the mechanical energy into hydraulic energy. The pump is power absorbing machine.

Pumping means addition of energy to a liquid to move it from one place to another, and this is done by means of piston, plunger, impeller, propeller, gears, screw etc.

A reciprocating
pump is a class
of positive-
displacement
pumps which
includes the
piston pump,
plunger pump,
and Bucket
pump.
It is often used
where a
relatively small
quantity of
liquid is to be
handled and
where delivery
pressure is
quite large.
In reciprocating
pumps, the
chamber in
which the liquid
is trapped, is a
stationary
cylinder that
contains the
piston or
plunger.

A single acting

Forward backwards stroke:- in a The close piston fitting moves

towards right, crank cylinder. moves from 0° to 180°.

This creates vaccum in the cylinder on the

left side of piston causing the suction valve

to open. The Reverse liquid enters stroke:- the The cylinder and

piston moves fills towards it. left,

crank moves from 180° to

360°. This cause increase of

pressure in the left side of

cylinder.

There are two main variations; external gear pumps and internal.

External gear uses two external spur gears, and internal gear use

external and internal spur gears.

Gear pumps are positive displacement.
