TYPES OF PUMP

CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
WHAT IS CENTRIFUGAL PUMP?

Used to transport fluids by the conversion of rotational kinetic energy

to the hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow.
The rotational energy typically comes from an engine or electric motor.
The fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis
and is accelerated by the impeller.
Common uses include water, sewage, petroleum and petrochemical
pumping.
HOW IT WORKS

a centrifugal pump converts rotational energy, often from a motor, to

energy in a moving fluid.
It works on the principle of forced vortex flow means when a certain
mass of fluid is rotated by external torque rise in pressure head takes
place.
Conversion of energy occur by virtue of two main parts of the pump:
A. Impeller
B. Casing.
Impeller converts driver energy into the kinetic energy & diffuser
converts the kinetic energy into pressure energy.
COMPONENTS

IMPELLER
SUCTION PIPE
FOOT VALVE AND STRAINER
DELIVERY PIPE
ROTATING COMPONENTS

Impeller:
1. The impeller is the main rotating part that provides the centrifugal
acceleration to the fluid.
. Shaft:
1. Its purpose is to transmit the torques encountered when starting and
during operation.
2. Supports the impeller & other rotating parts.
ADVANTAGE OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

These pumps do not have drive seals that lessen the risk of leakage
Applicable to pump out risky and harmful liquids.
They have magnetic coupling that can be broken easily in overload
condition and it protects pump from damage
The pump and motor are apart from each other so no heat transfer is
possible from motor to pump.
DISADVANTAGE OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

Energy loss because of coupling that produce some magnetic

resistance.

If intense load occur, chance are that the coupling may slips

If liquid with ferrous are pumped out, corrosion occurs and over the
time the pump may stop working.

Low flow can lead to overheating of the pump.
