The village of Vadu Izei
Vadu Izei is located in Northwestern Romania, in
Maramure County on the Iza River, which goes on to flow
into Tisa River near Sighetu Marmaiei.
Valea Stejarului is a hamlet that is under its
administrative ability.
Vadu Izei
Visit Vadu Izei to taste the
traditional way of living the life.
Exploring Vadu Izei on foot or by
bicycle is really easy. Once off the
main road, the visitor is introduced
to a lifestyle all but forgotten
elsewhere in Europe.
People lift water out of old wells,
throw grain to chickens in the
barnyard, rake dry cut grasses with a
wooden rake, bring in the milking
from the family cow, and hang rugs
out to dry after washing in the
riverside whirlpool.
Real living
Kids still play OUTSIDE
instead of on
smartphones or in front
of the TV.
These regions are poorer
people live with very
little, and have to be
resourceful to survive. It
is to appreciate the
honest simplicity of all.

The blacksmiths daughters.

Wood
Wood tends to be
the building
material of choice
in the area.
The tourist
information office
in the picture is a
wooden building in
Vadu Izei.
Wood
Even garages are built from wood.
Please observe the traditional wooden sculpted gates on the left.
Wood
The houses built
with modern
materials have
wood in their
structure.
The people are
very inventive, as
you can observe
the high voltage
ceramic insulator
on the fence
which have been
used to prevent
water from
corroding the
metal.
Ptru Godja
Was a traditional sculptor.
He lived in Valea Stejarului and his works
of art can be seen all over Vadu Izei at
people houses.
Died on the 3rd of January 2016.
Traditional activities
With the dawn of a new
day, the village comes
to life. In spring,
summer and fall,
farmers head to their
fields on foot or with
horse and wagon.
Farmers still use horses
and carts to do farm
work and transport
everything from hay to
firewood.
The wedding festival
There is a yearly wedding festival which takes place
in the village of Vadu Izei on the beginning of June.
The wedding Festival
It involves drinking,
eating, white shirts
and sheepskin
vests. Not
necessarily in that
particular order.
People pay money
to dance with the
bride.
Tourism
There are a number of businesses
that offer their services to
tourists.
Vadu Izei has a variety of
welcoming guest houses, well
informed staff at the information
center, and a network of craft
persons whose homes and
workshops are open to visitors.
Visitors to Vadu Izei have an
opportunity to learn about the
age-old arts and crafts of the
region by visiting homes of
artisans.
Ileana & Ioan Borlean Traditional House
Ileana & Ioan Borlean Traditional House is one of the many that
offer accommodation. Leave your car at your guest house and
walk, like most of the villagers do, to your destinations.
The village of
Vadu Izei

Exploring Vadu Izei on foot or by bicycle is really easy. Along

the way, stop for a coffee. And, if you are lucky, the bakery
near the palinca house and water powered mill will have
fresh bread from the mornings baking.
Gather a picnic from the guest house, hire a guide, and
explore the life of the small villages off the beaten path of
Maramure Land.
Thank you for
your attention!
Does anybody have any question???
