BACKGROUND
Historically the design of structures on soft compressible soils has created problems for civil
engineers. Construction without some sort of soil treatment is usually impractical due to
unpredictable long-term settlement (Charles, 2002).

Failures of slopes occur throughout the world and contribute to economic and casualty losses.
(partnership for geotechnical advancement, March 2006).

Shales of the lower Ecca stage of Natal, South Africa the late Paleozoic series are actively degrading
in particular topography (P.M maurenbechr, A.R Booth)

Bududa landslides (John Kasozi August 2013)

Manafwa-Tororo Gravity flow scheme.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
On observation, many structures of Manafwa-Tororo Gravity Flow Scheme
treatment plant are not functional, some have developed cracks and others are
washed away due to instability of slope irrespective of the quality in
construction carried-out.
OBJECTIVES
Main Objective
To investigate the causes of these slope stability problems, determine
the factor of safety and the mitigation to these problems.

Specific Objectives
Estimation of maximum water level of River Lwakhakha adjacent to
the study area.
Determine the slope characteristics of the area and the soil strength
parameters of the soil subjected to by the construction.
Calculate the loads of the structures placed onto the soil.
Analysis of the results using slope/w software and
recommendations.
SCOPE OF STUDY

This study will be limited to the project area which is the intake works
of the Manafwa-Tororo Gravity flow scheme boundaries.

In this study, the project is limited to site surveys, soil testing and
analysis of the results. 3(three)s Samples will be taken for lab tests and
a 1-D survey carried-out for Vertical electrical soundings.
PURPOSE OF STUDY
To determine the Ultimate loading to be subjected to the soil.

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
If this project is to be implemented, there will be less failure of the new
structures to be constructed since I would have ascertained how much
loading the soil can withstand.
METHODOLOGY
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE 1- Maximum water level of the river

The information will be collected from the local community.

Topographical surveys to establish the point on the side of the water

Use of EDM theodolite to establish the maximum water level.
METHODOLOGY CONTD
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE 2

Topographical surveys to establish the point on the side of the water.

Use of EDM theodolite
Soil sampling and taking for triaxial tests

Where
is shear strength (at shear failure),
is cohesion,
is normal stress on shear plane and
is angle of friction(phi)

Hydrogeological surveys
Hydrogeological surveyinterpretationinter-relationship with the already estimated values.
METHODOLOGY CONTD
Specific objective 3-Estimation of loads subjected to the soil

This will put into consideration the dead loads and live loads
Where by the dead load will be estimated using the design drawings used in the
execution of the project.

Maximum load = Dead loads + Live loads

EXPECTED OUTPUT

By the end of the project I will be able to know the cause of failure of
