Computer

Is an electronic device, operating under

the control of instructions stored in its own
memory, that can accept data, process the
data according to specified rules, produce
results, and store the results for future
use.

Data and Information
Data is a collection of unprocessed
items, which can include text, numbers,
images, audio, and video.

Information conveys meaning and is

useful to people.

into the memory of a computer.

Input devices is any hardware component

that allows users to enter data and
instructions (programs, commands, and
user responses) into a computer.

surface to enter input.

Two Devices Used for Pen Input

1. Stylus - is a small metal or plastic device that
looks like a tiny ink pen but uses pressure
instead of ink.
2. Digital pen - is slightly larger than a stylus, is
available in two forms: some are pressure
sensitive; others have built-in digital cameras.

Output Devices
Output is data that has been processed
into a useful form. That is, computers
process data (input) into information
(output).
Four Basic Categories of Output
Text
Graphics
Audio
Video

Display device or simply display, is an
output device that visually conveys text,
graphics, and video information. Information
on a display device, sometimes called soft
copy, exists electronically and appears for a
temporary period.
Two Types of Display Devices
Flat-panel Displays is a lightweight
display device with a shallow depth and
flat screen.

Printers is an output device that produces
text and graphics on a physical medium
such as paper or transparency film. Printed
information called hard copy (also called a
printout).
Two Types of Printers
1. Nonimpact Printers forms characters
and graphics on a piece of paper without
actually striking the paper. Some spray ink,
while others use heat or pressure to create
images.

2. Impact Printer forms characters and
graphics on a piece of paper by striking a
mechanism against an inked ribbon that
physically contacts the paper. Impact
printers characteristically are noisy
because of this striking activity.

System Unit
-is a case that contains the electronic
components of the computer that are used
to process data. The case of the system
unit, sometimes called chassis is made of
metal or plastic and protects the internal
electronic components from damage.
Motherboard sometimes called a system
board, is the main circuit board of the
system unit.

Two Main Components of
the Motherboard
1. Processor also called the central
processing unit (CPU), interprets and carries
out the basic instructions that operate a
computer.
2. Memory consists of electronic
components that store instructions waiting to
be executed by the processor, data needed
by those instructions, and results of
processed data (information).
