Who is Stanislavski
Stanislavskis theory is one of the biggest influences on modern theatre

Stanislavskis full name was Konstantin Stanislavski

Stanislavski is one of the most influential theatre practitioners

Stanislavski believed that actors should pay attention to their characters


offstage as well as onstage

Stanislavski discovered the term naturalism and why its important to


drama and theatre
Stanislavskis Background
Stanislavski was born in Russia 1863 to a theatre loving family

He died in 1938 at the age of 75

His real name was Konstantin Sergeyevich Alexeyev

In 1884 he was given the stage name of Stanislavski


Moscow Art Theatre
Stanislavski was the controller/director of the stage

The purpose of this was to take a new and fresh approach to new art
forms

This is where Stanislavski came up with system to train actors so they


can perform in any situation
What Did Stanislavski Believe In?
Stanislavski believed that all performances should be as realistic as
possible (natural), never braking the fourth wall. Stanislavski believed that
acting should be as realistic as possible.

He liked the idea of separating the audience from the stage and actors

He strongly believed in the forth wall


Stanislavskis Method
Stanislavskis method is when an actor
portrays emotions by putting themselves in
the characters shoes, sometimes using
personal events to show the emotions. Its
a set of techniques which help you
understand your character and get into the
role.

have a successful and good performance
Naturalism
Everything is as natural as possible

Set, costumes and props are historically correct

The play/show is the time limit of the character (2 hours of the show is two hours
of the characters life)

Naturalism usually explores serious subject matters (death, suicide, abuse etc.)
that can be performed on stage appropriately

Actors sometimes put their own circumstances into their characters circumstance
Stanislavski and Brecht Comparison
Brecht and Stanislavskis were completely different their theory's were
naturalism and surrealism (which are opposites)
Brecht saw the theatre as a way to manipulate audiences and to raise
issues that were shown during the performance
Stanislavski believed that actors should portray a realistic and emotional
performance
Brecht believed that actions and actors on stage shouldnt cause the
audience to emotionally identify themselves with it
Brecht believed the paly is a representation of reality, not reality itself,
where as Stanislavski believed that the play should be as realistic as possible
