CLAS1120U
Early Life Born on January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park,
New York

Educated at Harvard University and then

Columbia Law School

Entered public service after being inspired

by distant cousin, Theodore Roosevelt

In 1910, FDR won his first election to public

office, serving as a Democrat in the New
York Senate in his traditionally
Republican district

On March 17, 1905, he married Anna

Eleanor Roosevelt (his distant cousin)

They had six children together, one of which

died during infancy
From 1913-1920, FDR served as Assistant
Early Career and Polio Secretary of the Navy for President Wilson

Many say this experience prepared him for his role

as president in WWII

In 1920, FDR was chosen for vice presidential

candidate with James M. Cox as presidential
candidate

After losing the nomination, FDR returned to private

life

In 1921, he famously contracted Polio

Despite a tough battle with the disease, he never

regained use of his legs

His experience with the disease led him to establish

a foundation for other victims of the disease and
start the March of the Dimes program, which went
on to fun the successful vaccination for polio
Early Career and Polio
In 1928, FDR was elected governor of
New York and was then successfully
reelected

In 1932, FDR was nominated as

presidential candidate by the
Democratic National Committee

He famously flew to Chicago to accept

this nomination, pledging to steer the
country out of hard times

He then went on to beat incumbent

President Hoover by 7 million votes
When FDR took office, 13 million Americans were
The New Deal unemployed

In his first 100 days in office, FDR closed the

banks temporarily to pass legislation focused on
recovery

New agency measures tried to subsidize home

and farm management, regulate the stock market,
employ young men, insure bank deposits, and
more

These measures increased confidence in the

economy but were criticized for increased
spending and unbalanced budgets

Nevertheless, The New Deal had widespread

support and helped many Democrats get elected
in the next cycle

FDR himself won his reelection campaign by large

margins in 1936
While the nation was officially neutral, FDR aimed to
stop Nazi aggression and worked to aid allies such as
World War II Britain, France, and China

After the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor, on

December 7, 1941, FDR called for resources and
manpower to be directed towards a second world war

The New Deal legislation diminished and the Depression

wouldnt be fully relieved until the war was in action

On January 1, 1944 FDR created an alliance against the

Axis powers through the Declaration of the United
Nations, later becoming the United Nations

In 1940, FDR made history by becoming the first

president to run for a third time. Due to the extreme
circumstances of the difficult global conflict, the people
felt most comfortable with him in charge.

Unfortunately, the strain of the war took a heavy toll on

his life and FDR did not live to see the eventual victory
(died on April 12, 1945)
On January 14, 1942, Presidential Proclamation 2537
was issued requiring aliens of enemy nations to
Japanese Internment register with US Department of Justice (Italy, Japan,
and Germany)

A 1941 poll determined that 90% of Japanese

Americans were loyal citizens but yet mounting
pressures after the attacks on Pearl Harbor and
disdain from the agricultural associations led to
western-states support for the internment of all
Japanese Americans

FDR signed Executive Order 9066, which called for

the complete removal of Japanese Americans to
detainment camps

On January 2, 1945, Public Proclamation 21 released

the interned Japanese Americans, who were free to
return home (Although most had nothing to which
they could return)

Of the 10 convicted Japanese spies during WWII,

none of them were of Japanese ancestry
