INTRODUCTION

A mobile battery charger circuit is a device that can

automatically recharge a mobile phones battery when the
power in it gets low.

Nowadays mobile phones have become an integral part of

everyones life and hence require frequent charging of
battery owing to longer duration usage.

Battery chargers come as simple, trickle, timer based,

intelligent, universal battery charger-analyzers, fast, pulse,
inductive, USB based, solar chargers and motion powered
chargers.

These battery chargers also vary depending on the

applications like mobile phone charger, battery charger for
vehicles, electric vehicle batteries chargers and charge
stations.
CHARGING VIA 230 V POWER SUPPLY

In an AC-DC converter section, the transformer step-downs

the available AC supply to 9v AC at 75o mA which is
rectified by using a full wave rectifier, and then filtered by
the capacitor.

The 12v DC charging voltage is provided by the regulator

and the charger starts working and the power on LED glows
to indicate the charger is on.

A diode is connected between the output of the IC and a

limiting output voltage of the battery up to 6.7V is used for
charging the battery.

LM317 IC is provided for overcharging protection so that

the battery does not burst out.

The output pins are provided in such a way that any type of
mobile phones can be charged.
CHARGING VIA EXTERNAL BATTERY
ABOUT USB CHARGING
USB charging is currently the most universal method of charging an
electronic device. This workshop details the process of construction of a
cheap and simple portable USB charger which can be used to charge cell
phones, mp3 players, cameras, etc. and almost any device.
USB normally contains 4 lines Vcc(+5V), Data-(D-), Data+(D+)
and Gnd(Ground) . The Vcc and the Gnd line are used to power a device
and the D- and D+ line are used to transfer data between the host and the
device.
The USB is expected to maintain 5V within a range of 0.5V and
provide current of 100mA, unless requested for more current. To build a
USB charger all you need to do is build a circuit that outputs current within
the USB specification.
A cell phone could only charge if the current is 1A approx. and the
voltage is 5V . Therefore the data pins on the USB are connected with 100K
resistors to the 5V supply. This tells the device that the charger is connected
and the device charges normally otherwise the device charges slowly.
COMPONENTS NEEDED:

1) LM 7805 (5V voltage regulator IC)

2) LM317 IC (Voltage controlled regulator IC)
3) 100 K resistors (1/4 watt 2 nos.)
4) 1 K resistor (1/4 watt)
5) 100 uF capacitor (16V or more)
6) Green LED (3mm)
7) Soldering iron and solder wire
8) Switch (SPST)
9) USB type A female jack
10)PCB
11)Connecting wire
12)9V rechargeable battery
13)PCB Terminal
14) 6-0-6 Step-down Transformer
LM 7805 IC (5V voltage regulator)

1) LM 7805 is a linear voltage regulator IC.

2) It can regulate a voltage to 5V DC with an
input voltage ranging from 6V to 37V
approx.
3) It gives a constant current of 1A as output.
4) It is a very stable IC and is perfect for a
portable charger.

IC LM317 (Voltage controlled regulator IC)

The LM317 is an adjustable 3terminal positive voltage

regulator capable of supplying in excess of 1.5 A over an output
voltage range of 1.2 V to 37 V. This voltage regulator is
exceptionally easy to use and requires only two external
resistors to set the output voltage. Further, it employs internal
current limiting, thermal shutdown and safe area
compensation, making it essentially blowout proof. The
LM317 serves a wide variety of applications including local, on
card regulation. This device can also be used to make a
programmable output regulator, or by connecting a fixed
resistor between the adjustment and output, the LM317 can be
used as a precision current regulator.
