What is a Speech?

Speech refers to any type of


formal/informal address or discourse
intended to be delivered or orated to
audiences.
Types of Speeches
Depends on purpose and manner of delivery

1. Expository/Informative = the aim is to


inform or explain like a teacher lecturing to the
class.

2. Persuasive = the goal is to convince the


audiences like politicians during a campaign.

3. Entertainment = the purpose is to entertain the


audiences like showbiz awards night or standup
comedy.

4. Impromptu = a speech delivered on the spot
with no chance to prepare or memorize.
5. Manuscript = reading a speech from a
prepared manuscript.
6. Memorized = reciting a speech from
memory.
7. Extemporaneous = a speech where the
speakers are informed of the topic to speak about
but with a time limit on the delivery of their
speeches.
Preparing and Writing a Speech
1. Choose a topic appropriate for the event.
2. Consider the needs and interests of your audience.
--- Are they students, professionals, colleagues?
3. Gather the sources of information for your speech.
For relevance, glean data from current events like
news and pop culture. It also helps to inject
humorous moments into your speech.
4. Prepare an outline and write the draft of your
speech.
How to Deliver a Speech
1. Articulation = speak clearly and pronounce
the words well. Pause every now and then for
emphasis and breathing. Observe intonation
and inflection patterns for clarity and impact.
2. Modulation = speak loudly enough for
everyone in the room to hear you. Vary the
pitch and tone of your voice to prevent
monotony.
How to Deliver a Speech
3. Stage Presence = Be confident, stand up
straight, and observe poise and posture.
4. Facial Expressions, Gestures, and
Movements = Show enthusiasm with proper
facial expressions and body gestures. Also do not
be a robot and relax and move around the stage
too.
5. Audience Rapport = Connect with the
audience through eye contact, smiling, shaking
hands.
Culminating Activity

Role-Playing: Speech
What is your ambition in life? Do you want to be
a politician, teacher, lawyer, doctor, movie star, CEO,
etc.? Based on your ambition, compose a speech as if
you are already living your dream. You will be graded
based on how you have written your speech as well as
on how you deliver the speech in class according to the
qualities about the writing and delivery of speeches
tackled in this presentation.
