Kristina Olsdotter Fortun, sister of the previously mentioned [Christen Olson

Forthun, son of Ole Christenson Fortun], was born on 26 May1877 and died
as krmann or pensioner (so it was said!) in Fortun 12 January 1939.
Kristina took over the farm after Christen [her brother] emigrated to America
in 1906, and on 29 January 1908 she got the deed from her brother even
though she was single. When exactly she quit actual farm work, we dont
know, but it must probably have been around 1925. After that she became
kr, or earned her right to a pension, despite the fact she was unmarried.

[our Norwegian ancestors]
The Fortney Family Genealogy was traced back to1616, which is remarkable considering
that we were farmers. Compiling it has been the work of several generations
Albin Leonard Fortney [II] (1906-1968) was in Norway for Operation Midnight Sun, the
U.S.Armys liberation of Norway from the Nazis in 1945. He had access to the parish Bible,
an official record of Fortun families at the time. However, he credited his cousins,
Ruby and Alfred Fortney of the Viroqua branch of the family, with supplying much of the
information for his genealogy. Then Albins second son,
Alan Jon Fortney [III] (1939 - ) somehow inherited the responsibility. Alans cousin,
Adrian H. Dahl [III] (1919-2005) visited Fortun and picked up the authoritative Luster: Gards-
og aettesoge; Fortun sokn which Sonje Ann Dahl Jessen, his daughter, passed on to Alan
(because she didnt speak or read Norwegian).
On their trip to Fortun, Norway and the ancestral home farm in 2005, Alan and Jill
enlisted the gracious help of Torill Magnusdotter Yttre Otterhjell to verify much of the
genealogy and add a few pieces of information that other family sleuths had not found.

(1946 - ) [IV] did their own additional and very thorough study of the family.

who would have been the father of Aamund.

another whole lineage that had nothing to do with the farm

Aamund Jonson was connected with Bnr #1 and verifiable ancestor, but the dates cast doubt on that
may have been the progenitor of the Fortney clan, assumption. In addition, Aamund Jonson would have been 10
but the farm [brks numer #8] came into the family years old when his wife bore our Knut Aamundson, which is
through Synneva Clausdotter when she married both unlikely and not the custom back in the 17th century at
Knut Aamundson in 1653 [see branches 7a & 6]. least among farmers.

The Norwegian Flag
The Norwegian flag was created in 1821, but didnt
become the official flag until 1898.
The Norwegian flag is similar to the other Nordic flags

(Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Iceland) in its
pattern. All the Nordic flags have at least one
cross placed on a different colored back-
ground. Fredrik Meltzer was one of the men who
on Eidsvoll in 1814 formulated Norway's
constitution.
He got the idea for the Norwegian flag in 1821 after
having seen his son draw a blue cross in the
middle of the Danish flag: The Danish flag is red

has another cross, a blue one, on top of the white cross. The choosing of
colors was related to the French revolution and the French tri-colour (the French flag) - one
hoped the colors would inspire Norwegian nationalism.
The patriotic spirit needed an upswing after hundreds of years under foreign rule.
Norway gained independence from Denmark on the 17th of May 1814 to which it had belonged for
400 years.
From 1814 to 1905, Norway was united with Sweden, but in a much freer manner: For instance it
nation had its own parliament, constitution, and, for 7 years under Swedish rule, its own flag.
Norway gained its independence from Sweden on the 7 June 1905.
Syttende Mai, called Constitution Day in Norway, marks independence from Denmark, not
Sweden.

I know little of my father [Albert Christian

Fortney, right], and although I was eleven when
he died, I have very slight, conscious memory of
him except as a person in poor health, nearing
death, lying on a small daybed in the living room,
breathing hard and coughing much in the quiet
house. I remember wishing I could turn the radio
loader so I would not have to lay close to it, on
the long table in the dining room. Of my father I
knew that mainly he was an invalid who had
suffered the loss of his mercantile store early in
the Great Depression. He had had rheumatic
fever in his teen years and was left with what was
called a bad heart. I can remember the sharp,
