( using CATIA V5 )

Lecturer: Song Xue-Guan

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dong-A University

1. Whats CAD?
Computer-aided design (CAD):
also known as computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), is the use of computer
technology for the process of design and design-documentation.
Current computer-aided design software packages range from 2D vector-based
drafting systems to 3D solid and surface modellers. Modern CAD packages can also
frequently allow rotations in three dimensions, allowing viewing of a designed object
from any desired angle, even from the inside looking out.

2. Other CAXs
CAX system :
1. CAD
2. CAE (Computer-aided engineering)
CAE means a set of techniques that allow the assessment of aspects of a product
generally designed by CAD.
3. CAM (Computer-aided manufacturing)
Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is the use of computer software to control
machine tools and related machinery in the manufacturing of workpieces.

3. CAD Software

2-D CAD Software:

1.Auto CAD

3-D CAD software:

Mechanical Design -----CAD

Analysis & Simulation-----CAE

NC Manufacturing------CAM

Others (include but not limited to):

Digital Mockup (Product Synthesis)
Equipment & systems

64P137 CAD Practice 2/4 Mechanical Engineering

The main objective of this course is for you to learn how to use
CATIA as a design tool to build parts and assemblies, and how
to create drawings of those parts and assemblies; Students will

learn the basic capabilities in CATIA V5 to generate 3D models.
(course objective)
This course focuses on the fundamental skills and concepts
that enable students to create a solid foundation for their
designs and drawing.
