The document discusses research on using wavelet transform techniques to reduce noise during partial discharge measurement of power cables. The objectives are to study partial discharge behavior in cables, reduce noise in partial discharge signals using different wavelet transforms, and compare the techniques. Methodologies investigated include discrete wavelet transform with various thresholding functions and schemes for threshold estimation. Simulated signals were denoised and methods for optimizing threshold and decomposition level were developed. The research aims to test the methods on laboratory cable partial discharge signals.

Although these discharges have small (weak) energy, the thermal energies due to these discharges can cause aging, deformation and tear of the insulating material. PD testing gives an indication of deterioration of the insulation and is an indicator of incipient faults. On-Site PD signals are affected by interferences like DSIs, periodic pulses and stochastic pulses. OBJECTIVES
To study the behavior of Partial Discharges in
different power cables. To reduce the noise present in PD signals using different Wavelet Transform techniques in Power Cables. To compare the different Wavelet Transform techniques used to reduce noise during PD measurement. Limitations of existing De-noising techniques Fast Fourier Transform only frequency domain signal is obtained. Low Pass Filtering, Notch Filtering, Matched Filtering only time domain signal and Gibbs phenomenon. Exponentially-Weighted Recursive Least Squares time domain signal. Frequency Domain Adaptive Filtering using DFT frequency domain signal. Winger-Ville Distribution suffers from Cross terms. Short-Time Fourier Transform resolution issues. Wavelet transform 1. Wavelet is a wave like oscillation that begins at zero, increases and then decreases back to zero. 2. Based on the uncertainty principle of signal processing.
3. Wavelet Transform retains both frequency of the signal
and the time associated to those frequencies. 4. Wavelet Transform is carried out by scaling and shifting a mother wavelet and comparing it with the original signal. 5. Transformation should allow only changes in time extension but not shape of the signal. Threshold Functions Hard Thresholding Soft Thresholding
SCHEMES FOR THRESHOLD ESTIMATION
Universal Threshold Rule - Rigorous SURE Heuristic SURE Minimax Threshold Rule Exsisting Literature on Wavelet Transform De-Noising Most works are applicable to off site PD measurements. Most methods cause a considerable decrease in the Peak after De-Noising. Most methods dont provide a method for setting mother wavelet or decomposition levels. During on-line PD measurements noise varies frequently and a method suitable for de- noising all kinds of noise is essential. METHODOLOGY PLAN OF ACTION RESEARCH WORK COMPLETED PD Signals where simulated and mixed with noise in MATLAB. Simulated Signals De-noisied using Discrete Wavelet Transform. Method for setting Optimum Threshold Estimator Developed using Simulated results. Method for setting Optimum Decomposition Level Obtained using Simuated results. The Method for setting threshold estimator is as follows:
The method helped in de-noising simulated PD
signals with minimum Reduction on the peak amplitude of the signal. RESEARCH WORK IN PROGRESS The Method developed to be tested for a pulse trains. The Method for setting Optimum decomposition level to be tested for different lengths of signals and for different mother wavelets. PD signals from Laboratory Conditions to be extracted. PD signals extracted from Lab to be tested with the methods developed using simulation results.
