Planning
Planning is deciding in advance what is to be done in the future
Planning means deciding in advance :

Who is going to do it

Bridges a gap between where we are today and where we want


to reach.
Planning is a process which involves thinking before doing
Sets the goal of an organization.
Planning is done for immediate, short term, medium term and
long term periods.
PLANNING

For example, if the companys goal is to earn profit,


the manager needs to determine the steps necessary
to achieve that goal. This can include spending more
on advertising, hiring more experienced employees,
cutting costs, or improving the products being sold.
ORGANISING
Organizing

According to Henry Fayol, To organize a business is


to provide it with everything useful or its functioning
i.e. raw material, tools, capital and personnels.
Organization is all about division of work amongst
individuals and co-ordination of their efforts to
achieve the objective set by the organization.
Establishing the framework of working:
How many units or sub-units or departments are needed.
How many posts or designations are needed in each
department.
How to distribute authority and responsibility among
employees
Once these decisions are taken, organizational
structure gets set up.
In short Organizing as a process involves:
Identification of activities.
Classification of grouping of activities.

Assignment of duties.

Delegation of authority and creation of


responsibility.
Coordinating authority and responsibility
relationships.
STAFFING
Staffing

Putting the right person at the right job.


It is also known as Human resource Management.
It includes estimating manpower requirement,
recruitment, selection, Training and development
,performance appraisal and promotion of
employees.
Staffing is a continuous function.
Staffing involves:
Manpower Planning
Recruitment, selection & placement.

Training & development.

Remuneration.

Performance appraisal.

Promotions & transfer.


DIRECTING
Directing

After planning, organizing and staffing, the manger


as to guide and supervise his subordinates .

when
Putting plans into action is known as Directing.
Leadership qualities are required.
Motivating employees by providing monetory and
non-monetory incentives.
Communicating with them at regular intervals.
DIRECTING is said to be a process in which the
managers instruct, guide and oversee the
performance of the workers to achieve
predetermined goals.
Directing is said to be the heart of management
process.
Planning, organizing, staffing have got no
importance if direction function does not take place.
Elements of directing

Supervision- implies overseeing the work of subordinates


by their superiors. It is the act of watching & directing work &
workers.
Motivation- means inspiring, stimulating or encouraging
the sub-ordinates with zeal to work. Positive, negative,
monetary, non-monetary incentives may be used for this
purpose.
Leadership- may be defined as a process by which manager
guides and influences the work of subordinates in desired
direction.
Communications- is the process of passing information,
experience, opinion etc from one person to another. It is a
bridge of understanding
CONTROLLING
Controlling

controlling, is one of the managerial functions


like planning, organizing, staffing and directing.
It is an important function because it helps to check
the errors and to take the corrective action so that
deviation /error from standards are minimized and
stated goals of the organization are achieved in a
desired manner.
If planning is the beginning of the mgt process,
controlling may be said to be the final stage.
If planning is looking ahead, controlling is looking
back
Control is not possible without planning and
planning is meaningless without control
