The Mission of the Richmond County
Department of Social Services is to develop and
implement human services programs which are
intended to promote the health, well-being, self
sufficiency and protection of families, children
and adults within our communities.
Adult Protective Services
Adult Protective Services (APS) are provided to disabled Adults in response to reports of suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation. APS
social workers assess the degree of risk to the disabled adult, and work with other community based resources to develop a plan to protect
the Adult from further harm.
APS also provides Guardianship services, Special Assistance In-Home, and Payee services. APS also monitors and investigates
complaints made at the three Adult Care Homes in the county.
Also under APS is our Medicaid Transportation Unit. Medicaid Transportation is responsible for providing transportation to/from medical
providers to individuals for qualifying medical procedures with qualifying Medicaid.
Adoption Services
The decision to add a child to your family whether by birth or adoption is life-changing! The added responsibilities mean a new life for you
and the child. Richmond County Department of Social Services wants to find just the right family to meet the particular needs of each of our
children who are available for adoption.
Child Protective Services
Child Protective Services (CPS) are provided to children and their parents / caretakers in response to reports of suspected abuse, neglect,
or dependency. CPS social workers assess the degree of risk to the child, work with law enforcement agencies and initiate court action
when necessary.
CPS also assists the family in planning and accessing services to eliminate and / or prevent problems causing neglect, abuse, or
dependency. CPS assists families in arranging parenting classes, day care, health, and mental health services, substance abuse services,
etc. Community Based Programs are available in some cases, CPS arranges for the provisions of services such as foster care.
Child Placement Services
Child Placement Services are provided for children who are in Department of Social Services custody. Services include providing services
to children whose permanent plan is reunification, foster care, relative placement, adoption, or independent living. Also, responsibilities
include recruiting, licensing, re-licensing, and supervising foster homes.
