A. Advertisement
a) Definition of Advertisement

The word advertisement is derived from advertise originated


from latin advertere which means informing somebody about
something or drawing attention to something.

b) The Purpose of Advertisement to persuade

The purpose of advertisement text is to


persuade people to attract, to try or even
to buy the product or things offered.
c) Generic Structure of Advertisement
The generic structure of the text for a successful advertisement must
consist of :
a. Purpose : contains the writer purpose in composing the text
b. Name of product : contains name and brand, what product, service, or
events to sell)
c. User : contains who need product, what are the product and
service for.

d) Language Feature of Advertisement


The following language features used in the advertisement :
a. The use of simple and informed words.
b. Misspelling and coinages.
c. Frequent use of particular verbs.
d. The use of positive adjectives.
e. Frequent of compounds.
f. More simple sentences, fewer complex sentences.
g. More interrogative sentences and imperrative sentences.

Narrative Text
a) Definition of Narrative Text
Narrative text is a story with complication or problematic
events and it tries to find the resolutions to solve the
problem. It can not be separated from a story and a past
experience.
b) The Purpose of Narrative Text
The purpose of Narrative text is to amuse, to entertain
the reader with a story and to deal with actual or
vicarious experience in different way.
c) Generic Structure of Narrative Text

a. Orientation : sets the scene, where and when the


story happened and introduces the participants of
the story, who and what is involved in the story
Complication : tells the beginning of the problems
which leads the climax of the main participants.

b. Resolution : The problem is resolved, either in a


happy ending or in a sad (tragic) ending.

c. Re-Orientation / Coda : This is a closing remark


to the story and it is optional. It consiss of a
moral lesson, advice or teaching from writer.
d) Language features of Narrative Text
1) Focus on specific and usually individualized
participant
2) The use adjectives extending noun phrases
3) The use time connectives and conjunction to
make events sequence
4) The use adverbs and adverbial phrase to show
location and time of events
5) The use action verbs in past tense
6) The use saying verb indicating utterance and
thinking verbs identifying the thought, perception,
or feeeling of the characters
7) The use of past tense

NEWS ITEM
a) Definition of News Item
News item is a text which informs readers about
events of the day. The events are considered
newsworthy or important.
b) The Purpose of News Item
News item has the main function to inform readers,
listeners or viewers about events of the day that
considered newsworthy or important. There are two
kinds of news item text, written and spoken.
c) Generic structure of News Item
1) The generic stucture of news item are asfollows :
2) Newsworthy event : recount the events in summary from.
3) Background event : (background, participant, time, place) elaboraes
what happened , to whom and what circumstances.
4) Sources : comments by participants in, witnesses to and authorities
expert on he event.

d) Language Features of News Item


a. Focusing on circumstances
b. Using material process
c. Short telegraphic information about story captured in headline
d. Use of material processes to retell the events
e. Use action verbs
f. Use saying verbs
g. Use adverbs : time, place and manner.

Descriptive Text
a) Definition of Descriptive text
Descriptive is a text which gives description about an object
(living or non living things) such a person, place or thing.

b) The purpose of Descriptive Text


The social function of descriptive text is to describe a
particular person, place, thing, or animal.
c) Generic Structure of Descriptive Text
There are several sets of generic stucture in descriptive
text, they are :
a. Identification : contains the identification / statement of
matter / a will be described.
b. Description : contains the explanation / details description about
object that is identified in identification.

d) Language Features of Descriptive Text


Languages features of descriptive text are :
a. Focuses on specific participant
b. Use of declarative sentence
c. Use of adjectives and compound adjectives.
d. Using simple present tense
e) Types of Descriptive Text
a. Describing Process : it is not only to explain how something is
accomplished, but also to explain on why it is done and what is
needed to complete the processs.
b. Describing an event : a writer should be able to memorize and
remember what happened in that event.
c. Describing personality : describe people occurs farly areas of
physical attribute (hair, eyes, skin), emotional 9warm, nervous),
attributes (greedy, honest, humble, trust) and intellectual.
d. Describing place : presenting a concrete things in a place (it can be
a house, bus station, etc).
e. Describing an object : to describe an object accurately is done
through providing the physical objects characteristics such as color,
form shape, etc.
