REST AND REST SEAT

BUSHRA NAEEM
REST

Any component of a partial denture that is

placed on an abutment tooth, ideally in a
prepared rest seat so that it limits the
movement of the denture in the gingival
direction and transmits functional forces to
the abutment tooth.
REST SEAT

The prepared surface of abutment tooth

which receives the rest
FUNCTIONS OF RESTS

Directs forces along long axis of abutment

Functions

Maintains components in their planned

positions.
For example
rest prevent the movement of the denture
in the apical direction, the position of the
retentive portion of the clasp arm can be
maintained in the designated relation to the
tooth undercut
Functions

Prevents denture base from moving cervically

and impinging gingiva

Slides down incline

Fractured abutment so
there will be no rest seat
Major connector imbeds into tissue
Functions

Prevents extrusion of the abutment

Act as indirect retrainer
Give guidance for denture relining
Occlusal rest seat form

Smooth flowing outline form(i.e no sharp line

angles)
Occlusal rest seat form

Rounded triangular shape

Apex near the center of the tooth
Occlusal rest seat form

Base of the triangle should be one third of the

buccolingual width of the tooth
Occlusal rest seat form

Marginal ridge must be lowered and rounded

1 -1.5mm
Occlusal rest seat form

Floor inclined towards the center

Angle formed by the rest and the minor
connecter should be less then 90
Occlusal rest seat form

Floor should be concave or spoon shaped,

ball and socket joint
This prevents horizontal stresses and torque
Interproximal occlusal rest
seat
Adjacent rests , rather than single rest are
used to prevent interproximal wedging by the
denture framework
They shunt food away from the contact point
Extended occlusal rest

In kennedy class II modification 1, and class III

situations where distal abutment is mesially
tilted an extended occlusal rest should be
provided to minimize further tipping
Intracoronal rest

Precision manufactured attachments placed

within crown or retrainer
Lingual rest seat

Usually placed on a canine due to its well

developed cingulum
When the canine is not available incisor may
be used
Lingual rest seat

Lingual rest seat should be prepared on

enamel and it has rounded v-shape at the
junction of the gingival and middle third of
the tooth and the apex directed incisally.
Incisal rest

Inferior mechanically & esthetically

Lingual rest is nearer to the center of rotation
Less torquing potential
Can be used for stabilization of lower anterior
Bonded cingulam rest

Cast cobalt chromium alloy rest seat forms

attached to the lingual surface of the tooth
Composite resin can also be used as lingual
rest seat
Sapphire ceramic bracket can also be bonded
on the lingual surface of of mandibular canine
and shaped as rest seat
Implant as a rest

Implant can be used as a rest, effectively

resist vertical movement and provide support
Location of the implant can eliminate
unsupported denture base
