ABB
A Substation ...

is the energy node in a

power supply grid
is the base for a
successful industry
is the basis for a
successful growth of a
country
is the center for power
transmission and
distribution
provides / distributes the
energy makes energy to the end -

ABB
To run a substation bears some risk for...

Industry
sensitive processes require uninterrupted power

Utilities
have to guarantee the delivery of power all the time
have contracts with the industry

Blackout are costs for

ABB Switzerland Ltd. - 4

the industry and the utility

ABB
Value of Energy Transfer
Example:

Soazza 380kV is the

link Switzerland - Italy
1200 MVA
Value of energy
transfer: 900 kCHF/day
(up to 2 Mio)
Loss of profit for EGL if
this link is out of
service: 250 kCHF/day

ABB
A fault in a substation might cause ...

cascading trips
can be avoided by selective Tripping of a busbar
keep the power loss time short
selective fault isolation prevent extensive outages

heavy damage (burn down) to the busbar

long re-built time

damage to connected primary and secondary equipment

S
UR
Tripped main transmission lines 4 x 400 kV
AR
Disruption duration 4h, 20 min.
Energy not served 24500 MWh
Inhabitants left in the dark 100 Mio
Overall loss 10 Mio $

Assumption:
ABB Switzerland Ltd. - 7

Selective tripping would have ensured that half of the power could still be

delivered.
Result:
5 Mio $ Revenue saved in only one day
with a Busbar Protection System ABB
Numerical busbar protection...

cannot avoid faults, but it limits the damage

is the insurance of a substation

protects the important nodes in a network and its selectivity

increases the network stability

is the investment in a substation to secure revenues

provides monitoring functions of the substation from remote

ABB
Successful REB500 Trip in AIS Lskovec 220kV in CZ
On 6 December 2003, 10:18h the REB500
successfully and selectively tripped a phase to
ground fault at Liskovec 220kV substation.
During storm a station grounding wire was
broken and its one end fell down and hit busbar
W21 disconnector. in the measuring VT field and
caused phase L1 to ground fault. The REB 500
detected the busbar fault on W21 and selectively
tripped the entire busbar.
After a while the second part of the broken
grounding wire swung and hit an interconnection
bar between VT and disconnector at busbar
W11. The REB 500 detected and tripped
consecutive L1 to ground fault on W11.
The total clearance time for the first fault was
approx 50 ms (REB500 tripping time + circuit
