Charles West Churchman

(1913-2004)

A founding member of TIMS (The Institute of Management Sciences), C.


West Churchman served as its ninth president. He was the first editor-in-
chief of Management Science in 1954. He is internationally known for his
pioneering work in operations research and system analysis.

The minimal system In The Systems Approach (1968) Churchman outlines five basic
considerations for thinking about the meaning of a system:
the total system objectives and, more specifically, the performance measures of
the whole system;
the systems environment: the fixed constraints;
the resources of the system;
the components of the system, their activities, goals and measures of
performance; and,
the management of the system.
