OPTIMIZING TECHNIQUE

GRENADE EXPLOSION
INTRODUCTION
-Optimization is the act of obtaining the best
result under the given circumstances.
optimization techniques are useful in finding the
optimum solution or unconstrained maxima or
minima of continuous and differentiable functions
Thus the study of optimizing technique is very
useful to solving todays practical problem
Classical Optimization
Techniques
These are analytical methods and make use of
differential calculus in locating the optimum
solution.
The classical methods have limited scope in
practical applications as some the involve
objective functions which are not continuous or
differentiable
These methods assume that the function is
differentiable twice with respect to the design
variables and the derivatives are continuous
Contd..
Three main types of problems can be handled by
the classical optimization techniques
single variable functions
multivariable functions with no constraints,
multivariable functions with both equality and
inequality problems. with equality constraints the
Lagrange multiplier method can be used. If the
problem has inequality constraints, the Kuhn-
Tucker conditions can be used to identify the
optimum solution
ADVANCED OPTMIZING
TECHNIQUE
(GRENADE EXPLOSION)
Grenade explosion method is population
based new metaheuristic technique design
by G.R Ahrari and Atai by observing grenade
phenomenon.
GEM generate population of solution
randomly where each solution point
represent the location of a grenade.
Application of grenade
explosive method
Thermite welding
Thermite grenade is used in thermit welding
process
Hans Goldschmidt, whom invented thermite by
mistake in 1893
Thermite is commonly used in the railroad
industry to weld the faces of rails together.
It is also used for metal purification by the
thermite process.
Example
Design of Multiple disc clutch brake
The objective is to minimize the mass of the
multiple disc clutch brake using five discrete
variables: inner radius, outer radius, thickness of
discs, actuating force and number of friction
surfaces
Step cone pulley
The objective is to design a 4 step-cone pulley with
minimum weight using 5 design variables,
consisting of four design variables for the
diameters of each step, with the fifth being the
width of the pulley
Belleville spring
The objective is to design a Belleville spring having
minimum weight and satisfying a number of constraints
Other application

Design of a pressure vessel

The objective is to minimize the total cost of a

pressure vessel considering the cost of material,
forming and welding

Design of tension/compression spring

The objective is to minimize the weight of a

tension/compression spring subjected to one linear
and three nonlinear inequality constraints with
three continuous design variables

Design of welded beam

The objective is to design a welded beam for
minimum cost
