OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this unit the student will be able to:
1. Describe why APA format is required for written work in the School of
Nursing.
2. Locate resources to assist in proper APA formatting and style.
3. Apply APA format to create a paper with a title page, third level
headings, and a reference list.
4. Identify common stylistic problems in writing, including bias,
jargon/colloquialisms, passive voice, and anthropomorphism.
5. Describe the appropriate use of quotations in written work.
6. Identify when and how to insert a citation in text according to APA
format.
7. Apply APA format to create a reference list containing a book, a journal
article, and an electronic source.
8. Analyze the writing style of a hospital policy and procedure.

Introduction

This is a sample paper for our review of APA style. Please review the manual

and NURS 120 folder for writing tips as you begin to write your papers.

The First Heading

Your papers will all be in APA format with minor exceptions, as noted in the

guidelines.

Second Level Heading. APA format is only one component of the grading rubric

for your papers.

A telephone nurse coordinator conducted follow-up calls within 72 hours of the

patients discharge. The nurse coordinator inquired about the patients progress,

collected basic patient information, provided additional education, and

confirmed that the patient was attending follow-up appointments. Without

consistent advice from the nurse coordinator, the patient with heart failure may

be prone to readmission to acute care (Hines et al., 2010).
