I. Hydrology Module
1. Definition of
Terms
Evaporation
- is the process of a substance in a
liquid state changing to a gaseous
state due to an increase in
temperature and/or pressure.

Evaporation is a fundamental part

of the water cycle and is constantly
occurring throughout nature.

The
Hydrologic
Mall of Asia Reclamation Master Development Plan
Cycle
1. Definition of
Terms
Condensation
- Condensation is the change of
the physical state of matter from
gaseous state into liquid state, and
is the reverse of evaporation. The
word most often refers to the water
cycle.

The
Hydrologic
Mall of Asia Reclamation Master Development Plan
Cycle
1. Definition of
Terms
Precipitation
- is any product of the
condensation of atmospheric water
vapor that falls under gravity.

*Fog and mist are not precipitation

but suspensions, because the water
vapor does not condense
sufficiently to precipitate.
*Short, intense periods of rain in
scattered locations are called
"showers."
Rain
Mall of Asia Reclamation Master Development Plan
1. Definition of
Terms
Runoff
- (also known as overland flow) is
the flow of water that occurs when
excess rainfall flows over the earths
surface.

*This occurs because soil is saturated to full capacity,

or because rain arrives more quickly than the soil can
absorb, or because imperviousness produces runoff
to surrounding soil that cannot absorb all of it.

Surface Runoff
Mall of Asia Reclamation Master Development Plan
1. Definition of
Terms
River discharge
- is the volume of water flowing
through a river channel. This is the
total volume of water flowing
through a channel at any given
point and is measured in cubic
metres per second (m3/s).

*The discharge from a drainage basin or catchment

depends on precipitation (rainfall), evapotranspiration
and storage factors.
The
Hydrologic
Mall of Asia Reclamation Master Development Plan
Cycle
1. Definition of
Terms
Storm Return Period
- A return period, also known as a recurrence interval (sometimes repeat
interval) is an estimate of the likelihood of an event, such as an extreme rainfall,
earthquake, or a river discharge flow to occur.

The term "100-year flood" is used in an attempt to simplify the definition of

a flood that statistically has a 1-percent chance of occurring in any given
year. Likewise, the term "100-year storm" is used to define a rainfall event
that statistically has this same 1-percent chance of occurring

1. Definition of
Terms
Catchment area
- A drainage basin or catchment
basin is an extent or an area of land
where all surface water from rain,
converges to a single point at a
lower elevation, usually the exit of
the basin, where the waters join
another body of water, such as a
river, lake, reservoir, sea, or ocean.

2. RCPC against RCBC
1. In terms of hydraulic efficiency, circular section is the best
geometrical sections among all. Therefore, for relative small
discharge, precast concrete pipes (or ductile iron pipes) are
normally used which are circular in shape.
2. RC pipes are very easy and fast to install.
3. RCPC normally requires about 0.60m of soil cover. This is
already considered as loss of available head which is very
critical in flat areas.
4. RC Pipes are fabricated in one meter length. Even for
experienced contractors, the joints normally the weakest link.
Leaks causes piping and loss of backfill, and hence settlement
of the pipes.

Mall of Asia Reclamation Master Development Plan

COURSE CONTENT
2. RCPC against RCBC
1. RCBC sizes can be customized according to conveyance capacity
2. Fabrication of precast Box culverts can be segmented in more
than 1 meter in length (a 5m 2 x 2 RCBC can be installed in one
piece using appropriate lifting.
3. RCBC may not require soil cover. The top slab can be the
running surface, hence more head will be available.
4. Lower hydraulic efficiency than pipe culverts
5. RCBC are generally more expensive in terms of per cubic meter
conveyance capacity compared to RCPC.

COURSE CONTENT
2. RCBC against Bridge
1. In most cases box culvert structures can be easier to install and
cheaper than a bridge structure, and can have fewer geotech
issues, often reducing the need for piling and expensive below
ground or in-situ works.
2. Multi-cell box culvert units can also be used where customers
require longer spans, particularly in flood plain situations.
3. Fabrication of precast Box culverts can be segmented in more
than 1 meter in length. Larger size segments can be easily
installed using appropriate lifting. Bridges may take a lot
longer to construct.
4. Multi cell RCBC may be easily clogged than a bridge

Mall of Asia Reclamation Master Development Plan

COURSE CONTENT
2. RCBC against Bridge
1. Bridge can accommodate larger flows than RCBC.
2. Multi cell RCBC may be easily clogged than a bridge
3. In terms of cost, bridge is a lot more expensive

Mall of Asia Reclamation Master Development Plan

COURSE CONTENT
2. RCPC against RCBC
(RULE THUMB)

1. RCPC is used for small discharges ranging from less than 1m3/s
to 5 m3/s.
2. For flows greater than 5 m3/s but less than 10 m3/s, RCBC may
be used. However, this depends on the width of the existing
river regime to be crossed
3. If the width of the stream to be crossed is more than 10 meter,
and depth of waterway is more than 5m, a (slab) bridge may be
more advantageous.
