Five Principles of
Readability
Readability
refers
to the general ease with which
readers can understand and remember
sentences.
Syntax
In most situationsfrom
technical reports and research
articles to magazine articles and
news releasesreaders (and
editors) appreciate clarity and
concision
REMINDER!
Remember also that they are
principles, not rules. Principles
guide and shape action, but they
are not inviolable when
circumstances call for more
complex diction and syntax.
Lets Start!
The Five Principles of
Readability
1 2 3 4 5
Sentences that have a subject-verb-
object order are more readable
than those that dont.
1 2 3 4 5
When possible, put the agent
(subject) and action (verb) close
together in the sentence.
2 3 4 5
Keep modifiers and the words they
modify close together in the
sentence.
3 4 5
Whenever possible, put people in the
subject position in the sentence.
4 5
Put old information first in a
sentence, new information last.

Writing for your Reader
The point of technical writing is
communication, that is, the passing of
information or perspective from one person
to another.
