Resume :
Thirteen reason why is Netflixs TV show adapted from a book, that
premiered in 31 march 2017.
The series reports the 13 reasons for one teenage girl committing
suicide.
The series begins when Clay Jensen returns home from school to
find a strange package with his name.
Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah
Bakerhis classmate and crushwho committed suicide two weeks
earlier. Each tape details a reason that she killed herself. The tapes
were sent to various other people before arriving at Clay's door.
Clay is one of them. If he listens, he will find out why.
The first person to receive the tapes was Justin. They
kissed once, after she fell in love with him. However,
Justin told his friends they had sex, Hannah got the
reputation of being a "bitch" at school.
The second person to receive them was Alex, broke their
friendship when he published a "hot or not" list
comparing the girls in their class. He awarded Hannah
the title of Best Ass.
The third person was Jessica. After being compared to
Hannah on the "hot or not" list, Jessica slapped Hannah
and ended their friendship. The slap left a scar on
Hannah's forehead.
Next was Tyler, a classmate who worked as a photographer
for the school, he took a picture of Courtney and Hannah
kissing, after a one party, in Hanna's bedroom and
proceeded to publish that photo.
The fifth person was Courtney, who Hannah desired as a
friend. Tyler's picture created a new wave of rumours
about Courtney's sexuality. Trying to shield herself,
Courtney added to the rumors.
The sixth person was Marcus, who believed the rumors
about Hannah and tried to make a move on her,
expecting her to be easy.
Zach, the next day he tried to invite her out, but made
unwanted comments and was refused. As revenge, he
steals his notes of praise and encouragement - which
everyone could receive every day in their individual box,
due to a school project.
The eighth person was Ryan, after gaining her trust, stole a
poem written by Hannah in which she detailed her
personal problems. He published the poem anonymously
in the school newspaper, but some of their classmates
recognized Hannah's handwriting and mocked up and
humiliated her.
Clay was the ninth recipient of the tapes. Hannah
apologizes for including Clay, as he did not make her
suicidal like the rest. She admits that Clay was the nice
person, she ever met and that she wishes they had more
time to get to know each other. They kissed at a party,
they were in the room when Hannah asks for clay to
leave immediately, he obeys, goes away sad and crying.
The tenth recipient is Justin (again). After Clay leaves,
Hannah hides in the closet and witnesses Jessica being
raped by Bryce. Justin knew about the rape and let it
happen
The eleventh person on the list is Jenny, a cheerleader who
offered Hannah a ride home from the house party. She
hit a stop sign while driving and did not tell the police,
leading to a car accident which killed one of their
classmates.
The twelfth person was Bryce, who sexually assaulted
Hannah in a hot tub at the party before she left. It is on
this tape that Hannah begins discussing how she
planned to kill herself.
The last, and thirteenth person was Mr. Porter, the school
counselor, Hannah secretly recorded a conversation they
had, in which she expressed a desire to kill herself. but,
he did nothing to help her.
OPINION :
The series is narrated in first person;

Clays comments, actions and thoughts are alternated with

Hannahs voice from the tapes.

Through their points of view, we follow Hannahs story and all

of her disappointments, all the cruel things people did to her
from the moment she arrived in town until right before her
death.

Her sufferings are a snowball: in the beginning, Hannahs

problems were much smaller, but they led to others, and they
accumulated.
Suicide is a difficult topic probably for everyone, and
therefore a bold theme for a young adult romance. Thats
exactly what attracted us to this series, And also by the
suspense.

it is impossible to watch it without reflecting on the impact

our actions have on other peoples feelings Thirteen
Reasons Why gives more than 13 reasons to better
deal with bullying, sexual assault, and mental illnesses in
society.
Though the reasons behind Hannahs final decision were
evident to her, like many people who consider or commit
suicide, Hannah is oblivious to the impact her absence
will have to those who cared.
The teenagers are trying to establish their
independence. Sometimes when they would like
help on some level, they are also refusing it.

After seeing Hannahs calls for help go unanswered

one too many times, the resonating theme of the
series remind all of us that one suicide is the result
of multiple actions.
This series it certainly reminds us of the power we have to
change someones life, for better or worse.
