History
of the
Lasallian Presence
in the
Philippines
St. John Baptist de La Salle
1651-1719
He founded a community of
consecrated laymen to conduct,
together and by association,
schools.
He was canonized on May 24,
1900 and was declared as the
Patron Saint of Teachers on May
15, 1950
De La Salle University
DLSU was established in 1911 by
the congregation founded by St.
John Baptist de La Salle
Fratres Scholarum Christianarum or
Brothers of the Christian Schools
FSC in the Philippines
In 1901, the Americans established a new
public education system using English as the
medium of instruction.
However, Catholic educational institutions
continued using Spanish as their medium of
instruction.
American Archbishop of Manila, Jeremiah
Harty, turned to FSC to pave the way for the
introduction of English-based quality Catholic
education in the country.
First De La Salle School
in the Philippines
The Brothers have some hesitations because
the endeavour demanded teaching the sons
of the economic elite rather than the poor.

They eventually relented, conceding that

upper-class children also needed good moral
and spiritual training.

On June 16, 1911, 9 brothers opened in the

district of Paco, just outside the city of Manila.
The school accepted only male students
De La Salle School
On February 12, 1912, the school was
incorporated as De La Salle College and was
granted permission to confer commercial high
school diplomas.

In 1920, it started offering a two-year Associate in

Arts program in Commerce.

With its population rising, the college transferred

its location in 1921. It had, by then, established
its reputation as an excellent business school.
De La Salle College
During World War II, the college was allowed to
remain open, absorbing students from other
schools that had closed.

On February 1, 1945, the massacre of 16 brothers

and 25 other residents forced its closure. Classes
(primary and secondary levels) resumed in July of
the same year

The Bachelor of Science in Commerce program

was reopened in 1946 with a new four-year
curriculum, and the next decade saw the College
branching out into other fields.
De La Salle College
The College ventured into graduate education
in 1960 onwards.

Responding to the changing times (emergence

of the Womens Liberation Movement in the
West and of student activism in the country),
DLSC held its first Student Council elections in
1969 and opened its doors to female students
in 1973.
De La Salle University
On February 19, 1975, DLSC was granted
university status.

To deal with rising student population, FSC opened

a new school in 1978 (DLS-Santiago Zobel School)
to phase out and transfer the primary and
secondary schools from the University.

De La Salle University, then, has been solely a

higher-education institution.
De La Salle University
In 1980, the College of Career Development
was established as a night school for working
students, which eventually evolved into the
College of Saint Benilde in 1988.

In 1981, the University shifted from a

semestral calendar to a trimestral system as it
matures into its new status as a university and
responds to the economic conditions of the
times.
De La Salle University
In 1990s, DLSU began its bid to become a
research university.
As its centennial year drew near, the Philippine
Lasallian community framed the La Sallian Guiding
Principles (LGP) in 2003.
In 2008, the same principles were applied in the
formulation of the Expected Lasallian Graduate
Attributes (ELGAs)
De La Salle University
After one hundred years, De La Salle University
continues to be inspired by the charism of its
founder, aspires to be a leading learner-centered
research university, and commits itself to
bridging faith and scholarship in the service of
society, especially the poor.
