TRIGONOMETRY
Learning Objectives:
15.1 Understand and use tangent of
an acute angle in a right-angled
triangle.

Learning Outcomes:
(i) Identify the
(a) Hypotenuse
(b) The opposite side and adjacent sides
with respect to one of the acute angles
Explanation

In a right-angled triangle, the side

opposite the right angle is called the
hypotenuse (the longest side).
Depend on the reference angle, the side
opposite to the angle is called the
opposite.
The side near the angle in the right
angle triangle is called adjacent.
EXAMPLE
A

C B

AB is a hypotenuse.
According to the diagram above, the
reference angle is (ABC), BC is an
adjacent sides and AC is an opposite side.
Learning outcomes:
ii) Determine the tangent of
an angle
Explanation:
The tangent of an angle is the ratio of the
opposite sides to the adjacent side.
Tangent = Opposite side
Adjacent side
Example: (According to the above diagram)
Tan = AC
BC
Learning outcomes:
iii) Calculate the largest of an angle given the length of sides
of the triangle

iv) Calculate the length of sides of triangle given the value of

tangent and the length of another sides.

Explanation:
- Involve/ insert the numbers to represent the

Learning objectives:
15.2 and 15.3
Understand and use sine and cosine of acute
angle in a right-angled triangle.

C B
Solution :
Given sin = 5/13.

BC2 = AB2 AC2 ( Pythagoras theorem )

BC = 144
= 12 cm
Example 2 :
Given ABC is a right-angled triangle whereby B = 90, AB = 18cm
and BC = 24cm. Calculate the value of tan A, sin A and cos A.
A

18cm

C 24cm B
Solution
In ABC
AC = AB + BC
= 18 + 24
= 324 + 576
= 900
AC =900
= 30cm
Hence :
Tan A = BC = 24 = 4
AB 18 3

Sin A = BC = 24 = 4
AC 30 5

Kos A = AB = 18 = 3
AC 30 5
15.4(ii) : Convert for measurement of
angles from :
a) Degrees to degrees and minutes
i) 50.6 = 50 + 0.6
= 50 + ( 0.6 x 60)
= 50 + 36
= 50 36

ii) 30.2 = 30 + 0.2

= 30 + ( 0.2 x 60)
= 30 + 12
= 30 12
b) Degrees and minutes to degrees
i) 55 30 = 55 + 30
60
= 55 + 0.5
= 55.5
