MANAGEMENT of OsteoArthritis and Acute Pain

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a Degenerative joint disease characterized

by the breakdown of the joint's cartilage and hypertrophy of bone and

Articular Margins.
The Pathology of Osteoarthritis

In healthy joints cartilage acts as a shock absorber when you put weight
on the joint

The slippery surface of the cartilage allows the bones to move

smoothly.

In OA the cartilage gradually becomes rough and thin, and the bone
underneath thickens.

Over time the cartilage may wear away entirely, and the bones
will rub together.
What it looks like
Risk Factors for OA
Sign & Symptoms

Pain, especially when moving a joint

Swelling or bumps

Sore and stiff fingers and foot

Grating sound when the roughened cartilage on the surface of the bones
rubs together

Difficulty in certain movement for example walk up the stairs

Clinical Efficacy of Artifen/Diclofenac sodium in
OsteoArthritis
A variety of clinical trials in more than 15,000 patients with
osteoarthritis have shown Diclofenac to be effective and well
tolerated

The results of this review document that Diclofenac is as effective as

non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of
Osteoarthritis.

Renal Colic

Renal colic is a type of abdominal

pain commonly caused by kidney stones.

Renal colic is caused by a blockage in

your urinary tract due to Kidney stones.

Blood clots, ureter spasms, and dead

tissue may also block your urinary tract.
Biliary Colic

Biliary colic is the term used to describe

a type of pain related to the gallbladder
that occurs when a gallstone transiently
obstructs the cystic duct and the
gallbladder contracts.
Management of Renal and Biliary colic

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such

as Diclofenac and antispasmodics like
butylscopolamine are used.

Although morphine may be administered to

assist with pain management, it is often not
recommended as morphine raises ureteral
pressure, worsening the condition
Artifen/Diclofenac Sodium Injection in Renal Colic

Provides Excellent Analgesia in Renal Colic & highly effective but

should be used with care in patients at risk of renal impairment,

cardiac failure and gastric ulceration in reducing number of new colic

episodes & readmissions to hospitals
