CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES
The various common activities in pipeline construction are
as under
Excavation
Cutting / Welding
Radiography
Sand blasting / Coating
Crossings
Lowering
Hydrotesting
EXCAVATION

Proper slope and suitable bench should be


provided
Excavated earth not to be placed within one meter
of the trench edge
Vehicles not to operate too close to work area.
Barricading
Precautions for underground facilities
To be away from swing area
CUTTING / WELDING
Common hazards are sparks, molten metal, flying particles,
harmful light rays, electric shocks etc.
During cutting / welding proper type of helmets/
goggles, face shields, gloves,should be used.
Sufficient fire extinguishing equipments should be
available at site.
Only approved and well-maintained apparatus are used.
Cables should be checked for any worn out, cracked
insulation or loose joints before starting the jobs.
Power source should be turned off at the end of the job.
CUTTING / WELDING

Proper handling and positioning of cylinders.


Valves of cylinders should be kept close, when not
in use.
Avoid Heating of cylinders.
Always use a friction lighter.
Protect hoses from hot objects.
RADIOGRAPHY

Area should be cordoned off.


Radiation warning sign.
Radiation level should be monitored by
Radiation survey meter.
Personnel should wear protective equipments
and film badges issued by BARC.
Keep away from radiography source.
SAND BLASTING / JOINT COATING

Use of suitable PPEs.


Hose should be of proper quality and healthy.
Away from work place.
Lighted torch shall never be left unattended.
Care during holiday checking
CROSSINGS

Barricading
Warning sign boards
Proper diversion
LOWERING
Only lowering belt should be used.
Lowering belt should be healthy and of proper
quality.
Proper & sufficient equipment.
Counter weight to be used.
No person should remain within the radius of boom
and underneath the load.
Keep equipments at safe distance from trench edge.
Equip. moving area should be hard, firm and leveled.
HYDROTESTING
Approval of hydrotest procedure.
Calibration of equipments.
Proper size and length of bolts and suitable gaskets
Fittings should be of proper pressure rating
Use of proper headers and qualified welders
Stepwise loading.
Depressurize before lightening or loosening any bolt
Danger tags on equipments.
Barricading.
Sign boards.
Continues monitoring.
