INTRODUCTION

Hair is one of the vital parts of the body. It is a protective appendage on the body and considered as an
accessing structure of integument along with sebaceous glands, sweat glands and nails(Paul et al, 2016).

Hair cream is a product used to enhance the glossy appearance on the hair, stimulate the scalp and used as an
anti-dandruff and condition the hair (UNBS, 2013).

If applied properly, most styling products will not damage the hair aside from drying it out. Since most styling
products contain ingredients that can dissolve natural oils, many hair products also contain ingredients which
can cause build-up, resulting in dull hair (Odunlana,2007).

This may result in several problems such as dry hair, hair breakage, eczema, and the thinning of hair
Problem statement

Hair cream production is one of the businesses which small and medium scale
entrepreneurs venture into. Due to the surge in production, many products have
fallen below standard.

Although extraction of oil from neem and moringa oleifera seeds has been
extensively studied, there is very little work in the area of its usage to produce hair
cream despite the availability of huge experimental data on its extraction and
characterisation. thus the need to resort into the use of moringa oleifera and neem
seed oils to produce the hair cream.
Introduction contd
Aim and objectives

The aim of this project is to produce hair cream using Moringa oleifera and Neem seed
oils.

Objectives

The objectives are to:

Procure the Moringa oleifera and Neem seed oils

Produce a hair cream using a blend of the oils

Characterize the produced hair cream

Justification
Availability of Neem seed, Moringa oleifera seed and advantages of a hair cream are the motivation of this
research project.

Meeting of quality product specification which made the product adaptable for all weather.

Relatively cheaper and easy produce which made it affordable.

Scope

The scope of this project is limited to produce a hair cream from Moringa oleifera and Neem seed oils and
determining its quality using the pH, and thermal stability test method.

Methodology
Procurement of neem and moringa oleifera seed oils.
Heat 69g of paraffin oil in a 250ml beaker for 3 minutes on a heating mantle
Add 40.5g of petroleum jelly into the mixture and leave it for 5 minutes.
Add 6g of lanolin and stir carefully with a stirring rod
Add 12.75g of the Moringa oleifera seed oil and 9g of Neem seed oil in the mixture and stir continuously
Crush 12g of paraffin wax into smaller sizes and add gradually into the mixture,
Allow the crushed paraffin wax to dissolve properly inside the beaker and stir continuously
Heat the mixture to 70oC for 3minutes until all the components are well mixed and distributed in the mixture.
Add of 0.375g colourant and 0.375g of perfume
Remove the mixture from the heating mantle and allow to the temperature of the mixture to cool down to
40oC.
Pour the content of the beaker into a container and allow to stay for 45hours, .
Methodology contd
Chemical analysis of the hair cream
After 45 hours, the products were observed and there was no any physical change or any physical instability, and then
chemical assessments was done on the samples.
pH test
The pH test was carried out to determine the acidic or alkaline nature of the hair cream. This was done by using digital
pH meter, A small quantity of the sample was put into a beaker and the pH determined by introducing electron into the
sample and the value was recorded.
Thermal stability test
50g of the sample was place into an effectively sealed test tube and was placed into a thermostatically controlled oven at
37oC for 8hrs, making sure that the sample was totally sealed. The result of the products was taken to have passed the test
if on removal from the oven, the following indication of instability are not observed :
Change of colour
Occurrence of smell or odour
Phase separation
Formation of granules or crystal growth
Shrinkage due to evaporation of water

CONCLUSION

Based on the results obtained in this research project, it can be concluded that the tested properties

(parameters) of the produced hair cream are within the chemical requirements of hair cream

standard values reported in the literature.

The results showed pH 6.91 for sample one, pH 6.01 for sample two, and pH 6.31 for sample three

and the samples passed the test for thermal stability with no observed changes in the samples after

the thermal stability test.

RECOMMENDATION

From the investigations carried out on the production of hair cream using neem and

moringa seed oils, the following recommendation could be made:

Better laboratory equipment should be used like magnetic stirrer with temperature

regulator.

Use of purified mineral oils and other ingredients to get high quality hair cream

products.
