What is GIS?

• Full Form of GIS is GAS INSULATED SWITCHGEAR.

• SF6 Gas Used in GIS. ( Sulfer Hexa fluoride)
• The use of GIS System as in switchgear reduces the
clearance distance between active and non-active parts
of a switchgear. facilitating the following advantages of
gas insulated applications compared to air insulated
applications:
• Less space requirements - especially in congested city
areas
• Less sensitivity to pollution, as well as salt, sand or even
large amounts of snow
• Less operation & maintenance costs

Safety Precaution for Operating of GIS.

1.Use Face Shield.

2.Use Arc Suit.
3.Use Hand Gloves.
4.Use Goggles .

GIS Breaker (VD4) Emergency Manual
operation

Before operating the circuit-breaker, observe the switch position

indicator. ( see Above Figure)
● On failure of auxiliary voltage, it is possible to open the circuit-
breaker using the mechanical OFF button at any time. Closing of the
circuit-breaker with the mechanical ON button is dependent on the
stored energy spring mechanism being charged. The condition of the
stored energy spring mechanism is displayed mechanically.
● On failure of auxiliary voltage or the stored energy spring charging
motor for the circuit-breaker, the charging process can be carried out
or completed manually.
● For this, insert the charging lever into the receptacle and perform
approximately 25 strokes until the charged condition is indicated.
When the charged condition is reached, the charging mechanism is
disengaged, and no further movements of the charging lever can be
made.

3P Isolator / Earthing Switch operation

1. A crank is required for manual operation of the switch

2. Observe the switch position indicator before operating the three
position disconnector
3. Switch the circuit-breaker in the relevant panel off.
4. Swing the flap of the mechanical access lock to the right (It is
not possible to move the flap when the circuit-breaker is closed.) In
double bus bar systems, when the mechanical access lock is
used, the three position disconnector and the disconnector in a
panel are interlocked. It is possible to move the flap of one switch
when the other switch is in the OFF position.
5. Insert the crank into the shaft of the three position disconnector
mechanism
6. Always perform switching operations right up to the stop

3P Isolator / Earthing Switch operation

1) Approx. 24 turns of the crank are required from the OFF position
of the three position Isolator to the ON position of the earthing
switch or Isolator and vice versa.
2) Earthing switch OFF → ON
A. To close the earthing switch, turn the crank Anti-clockwise until
the stop is reached.
B. Withdraw the crank.
C.Close the flap of the mechanical access lock.
3) Isolator OFF → ON
A. To close the Isolator, turn the crank clockwise until the stop
is reached.
B. Withdraw the crank.
C. Close the flap of the mechanical access lock, if fitted.

Checking the Gas Pressure in gas
Compartment.

1. Remove the protective cap from the filling connector by turning it

Anti-clockwise.
2. Do not press the valve pin in, as otherwise gas will flow out of the
valve.
3. While pulling the locking ring outwards, press the coupling of the
temperature-compensated pressure gauge into the filling
connector.
4. Check the reading on the scale of the temperature-compensated
pressure gauge.
5. The reading must be in the green area of the instrument’s scale. If
it is not, or if the site altitude is greater than 1000 mtr.
6. Remove the temperature-compensated pressure gauge by pulling
out the locking ring on the filling connector.
7. Screw the protective cap onto the filling connector.

Heat Sink use in GIS

1. Heat sinks fitted on the bus bar compartment for rated currents >
2000 A are as a rule supplied separately and installed after the
panels have been set up.
2. Heat sinks are fitted for dissipation of heat.
3. The weight of a heat sink is approx. 90 kg.

Inspection and
maintenance of the GIS switchgear

1. Check primarily for dirt, corrosion and moisture.

2. If you find that the switchgear is not in the proper condition, take
appropriate action, e.g. cleaning of the switchgear, removal of
corrosion or rectification of the cause of the moisture.
3. All parts in SF6 are maintenance-free.
4. The three position disconnector is maintenance-free for 2000
operating cycles, and the disconnector for 1000 operating cycles.
5. ABB can be appointed to decommission and dismantle the
switchgear. The switchgear is then professionally dismantled by
ABB and the SF6, which is normally reusable, removed before the
switchgear is broken down into its remaining components.
