Why conduct the Study?

 It is a fact that poor problem solving

performance of Filipino students continued to
escalate in all levels of the Philippine education.

 Poor performance, however, does not

necessarily mean low intellective potential.

 Cognitive Interference, in this study, refers to

cognitive, affective, and physiological aspects of
students which possibly influence learning
performance.

The objectives, therefore, are to…
 measure the degree by which students, while
solving word problems, experience various
types of thoughts, feelings, and physical
interference;

 establish relationship between cognitive,

affective, and physiological responses and
performance in problem solving; and

 identify predictor/s of problem solving

performance.

Framework of the Study..
The Excessive cognitive
interference diminish the
attention capacity and
make the performance
level down making him/her
to feel unhappy, tense
and anxious

How and where was the study conducted?
 A predictive cross-sectional study conducted at the
end of the 2nd semester of AY 2012-13;

 Respondents were randomly selected 122 1st year

and 2nd year education students of SLSU – Tomas
Oppus;

 The instrument used was the adapted

Internationally Standardized Cognitive Interference
Questionnaire (Sarason, et. al., 1986)

 Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were

used in the analysis of data.

The Findings…
 First Year and Second Year
education students of SLSU –
Tomas Oppus performed at
“below average” in mathematical
problem solving with a mean score
of 20 and a standard deviation of 4.

Sample Problem # 3:
In a 3-digit number, the hundreds digit is 4 more than the units digit and
the tens digit is twice the hundreds digit. If the sum of the digits is 12, what
is the hundred digit?

What can be concluded?

Tension, worry, test-irrelevant

thinking, and bodily symptoms are
significantly related to students’
performance in problem solving.
However, only test-irrelevant
thinking, worry, and tension were
identified as its significant predictors.

Recommendations…
 Instructional Planning must include the creation
of a friendly learning environment especially for
mathematics subjects;

 Introduce creative mathematics which will

enhance students appreciation of mathematics
as a creative art and fun; and

 Create instructional programs that will help

students manage well tensions, worries, and to
avoid irrelevant thinking before, during, and
even after the test
