Introduction

Hello Friends,
Greetings!!

Our association with Thermic fluid system took us to various

companies in various sectors all over India and abroad.

During these visits, we observed many positives or challenges in TF

operations. This Series of articles is sharing of our knowledge, as an
outcome of the same. We will have Presentation, TIP and detailed
article on presentation every week at regular intervals.

Please share you experiences, your expectation of topics and let us

know any name is to be added.
Preamble
I was chatting with friends. Topic was a Heating problem in
Thermic fluid system installed in well known Industry.

I was surprised to hear about the problem because the system

was well designed. It was operating quite efficiently,
everything was in order. How come suddenly problem started?

The consultant said,” Hey, They had some balance capacity in

the Heater. They expanded and …..”

In our 25 years interaction, we found many such cases, This

forced us to write about “Precautions before Expansion”

Plan In advance
Important points to look into before expanding
1. • Present generation capacity – Installed vs Actual

2. • Heat Delivery:

3. • Absorption of heat:

4. • Oil capacity : Present vs Future.

5. • Utility:
Heat Generation

Check if you
Ensure Consider are burning
excess heat Higher heat full rated What is the
generation demand on-off
capacity is during fuel/hr., frequency of
available on winter – Peak Load the heater?
the heater monsoon. consumption
requirement?
Heat Delivery
Well designed velocity of fluid.
Pipe size and distribution.
Material specs for pipe, flanges, gaskets, nut-bolts.
Insulation.
Booster – Secondary pump requirement.
Various numbers Reynolds, Prandtl.
LMTD considerations in utility.
Heat Absorption

Surface Velocity of Turbulence

cleanliness fluid. and time.
Thermic oil

What is present oil vs future oil capacity?

Whether present expansion tank is sufficient?

Design of deaeration tank inlet velocity?

Availability of side stream micro filtration?

Utility

Heat requirement in utility kcal/hr

Temperature required degree C

Pressure differential across utility kg/sq cm

Flow required cubic mt/hr

Plan everything on board before going for expansion.
This will ensure :

Reduce
Avoid forced
Better oil life, Manpower
shutdown
cost,

This will make plant “Safe-n-Healthy”

“Safe to operate – Healthy with profits”
