 How do Civil Engineers design these

structures?

 What are the most important things a Civil

Engineer should think about?

Brunel University London

http://www.brunel.ac.uk/cedps
College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences

How do Civil Engineers design these structures?

 First we have an idea

Brunel University London

College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences

How do Civil Engineers design these structures?

 Then use computer programs to illustrate/analyse our idea

Sydney Opera House, Australia

How do Civil Engineers design these structures?

 Finally the idea turns into reality

Brunel University London

College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences

How do Civil Engineers design these structures?

 Detailed steps include:
1. The idea is scoped:
• A need is identified
• Possible solution list

2. A site is selected:
• Geology and soils

• Existing/previous use – environmental impact, connectivity to surroundings (roads, rail,

energy, water, etc.)

3. Checking the site/information needed:

• Climate, soils, geology, drainage, natural and artificial hazards, etc.

4. The design stage:

• Architects, design engineers, project manager, regulatory bodies and other stakeholders.

5. The construction stage:

• Safety first culture, the right people, communication, project budget, contracts, logistics and
etc.

What are the most important things a Civil Engineer

should think about?
From the very beginning and at every stage of the
project, these points should be considered
• Is it safe?
• How can I make it safer?
• First risk assessment – what could go
wrong?

Brunel University London

College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences

What can Civil Engineers contribute once a piece of

infrastructure is no longer needed?
1. Contribute to safety;
2. Reuse of CDW
3. Recycle of CDW

Key Messages

1. Civil engineering is a broad discipline.

2. Civil engineers need both technical and ‘soft’ skills

to be effective.

3. Health & Safety Risk Management underpins every

activity.
