He is one of the most prolific writers in
the history of writing.
Childhood, Studies and Personal Life

 Kazantzakis was born in 1883 in Heraklion.


 From1902 to 1906, he studied law at the University of
Athens.
 In 1907, he went to Paris to study philosophy.
 In 1911, after a stormy relationship, he married Galatea
Alexiou, a writer.
 In 1945, Kazantzakis remarried, this time to Eleni Samiou
in the Greek Orthodox Church.

 In 1957, he died in Germany.
career
 During the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) Kazantzakis volunteered
with Special Services in the Premier's office.
 In 1919, as the director general of the Greek Ministry of Public
Welfare, he helped feed and rescue over 150,000 Greek-born war
victims.
 Between 1922 and 1957, he travelled to Paris, Italy, Russia,
Spain, Cyprus, Aegina, Egypt, Mount Sinai, Czechoslovakia, Nice,
China and Japan.
 When the German occupation ended, he was made president of
the Socialist Workers Union.
 In 1945, he was appointed a minister in the Sofouli government
of Greece
 He worked for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris (1947–48).
 He then moved to Antibes, France.

His work has been translated to more than 50 languages all over the globe.

Awards and achievements
 Kazantzakis was nominated for the Nobel Prize for
literature four times but never won.
 In 1956, he received the International Peace award.
 In 2007, a 10 Euros collector’s coin was minted with
his image on one face.

Kazantzakis died on Oct. 26, 1957. A plain wooden cross marks his grave
