The Origin of Algebra
Uses of algebra in life daily life
•We use Algebra in our daily life in many
different ways.
•But we do not notice that we are using
algebra.
•Such as.........
• Every day life
• Formulas are a part of our lives. Whether we drive a car and need to
calculate the distance, or need to work out the volume in a milk
container,

• Analysis
• analyzing the cost, price or profit of a business

• Decision making
• Decisions like which cell phone provider gives the best contracts to
deciding what type of vehicle to buy, you will use algebra to decide
which one is the best one.
• By drawing up a graph and weighing the best option you will get the
best value for your money.
• Example:
When filling your car up with gas you can use a
form of algebra. Lets say you only have RM 50.00
to spend on petrol today and petrol is RM 2 per
litre. How many litres could you buy?
Introduction to Algebra

•Algebra is the use of letters and

symbols to represent values and their
relations , especially for solving
equations.
•The combination of each letters and
symbols are called “ Algebraic
expressions”
CONSTANT
•Constants are symbols representing
exact value like numbers. Constants are
always written.
•An expression like b, a3 and xy has a
constant of 1.
•1 is not written in any expression. If an expression
has no constant , it is understood that the
constant is one.
Expression Constant
•7b7 •7
•23x y
2 •23
•ab4c •1
Variables

•Variables are used to represent

unknown values.
•They are often represented by letters.
•If an expression has no variable,
therefore the expression is exact.
Expression Constant
•7b7 •b
•23x y
2 •xy
•ab4c •abc
Exponents
•Exponents are seen at the top of a
variable.
• Exponents in an expression can be like or
unlike.
•They also show how many times the
variable appear in an expression.
Expression Constant
•7b7 • 7

•23x y
2 •2
•ab4c • 4
