BOX TRANSPORT MECHANISM

INTRODUCTION:
There has always been an intermittent demand for
movement of packages in industries. The objective of this mechanism is to
transport packages with a system of mechanical linkages.
This mechanism has the principal objective of transferring the
boxes into a position that enables the operator to independently control the
operation with minimum energy consumption.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

The working of box transport mechanism is based on the inversion of a four bar
mechanism. This mechanism uses parallel crank mechanism as its working
principle.
PARALLEL CRANK MECHANISM:
If in a 4 bar linkage, two opposite links are parallel and equal in length, then any of
the links can be made fixed, regardless, the two adjacent links will always act as a
pair of cranks, i.e. , both will have complete revolution about their joints on the
frame. The use of such mechanism is made in coupled wheels of locomotives in
which the rotary motion of one wheel is transmitted to the other wheel.

WORK PLAN
The following are the work plan for the box transport mechanism.

STAGE 1: Collecting the materials


• The links in the mechanism are drawn in 3D using Autodesk fusion 360.
• The model is then converted into a 2D model and the dimensions are fixed.
•The links are then designed in carpentry workshop.

STAGE 2: Fabrication of components


The following are components fabricated
•Wooden Frame: It is used to hold the whole parts of the machine. It is mostly made
using a rectangular shaped wood piece or board.

TITLE
•Linkages: The linkages are made by plotting the dimensions of mechanism from
the 2D image obtained on wooden pieces and then cutting them by appropriate
methods.

•Bolt and nuts: It is used to connect the linkages to each other and also to the
wooden frame.

•PVC Pipe: It is attached to one of the wheel to act as a crank thus producing the
rotary motion.

TITLE

STAGE 3: Process for fabrication


•Wood Cutting: The linkages and the rectangular board are cut using a metal cutter
in wood cutting process.
•Drilling: Drilling is done to fix the bolt and nut so as to attach two linkages or
linkage to the wooden frame such that to make it operational.

STAGE4:Assembling the components


All the components are assembled in correct manner . The mechanism is checked
for any errors or problem in working.

ADVANTAGES:

•Lubricants are not required as that in conveyor belt transport systems.


•It is relatively simple to construct.
•In case of using a motor, a low speed motor is sufficient.
•Easy maintenance.
•Less skilled operators are sufficient.
•Noise operation is reduced.

DISADVANTAGES:

•Compared to conveyor belt system, this mechanism is slow in speed.


•The conveyor belts can be programmed as per the specific needs of the
manufacturer, whereas that is not possible in case of this mechanism.
•Automation of this mechanism is a tedious process.
•Initial setup cost is high.
•Used only in small scale industries.

APPLICATIONS:

•This mechanism is used in medical production fields.


•It is used in bottle filling process.
•Beverage production companies uses this mechanism.

MODIFICATIONS OR ALTERNATE IDEAS:


•Solar panels can be used to run the crank if connected with motors to get a better
energy efficiency.
•Trying to automate the system can help in usage of mechanism in large scale
industries.
