ACTIVITY
THE CARTESIAN
COORDINATE
PLANE
The Rectangular or Cartesian Coordinate System named in honor of
the seventeenth-century French mathematician and philosopher Rene
Descartes.
m=y2-y1/x2-x1
EXAMPLE:
m= 5-1/2-0
m=4/2 Simplify.
m= 2
The slope is positive so the line rises to the right.
FINDING THE
EQUATION OF THE
LINE
-A linear equation of x and y represents a
straight line called the general form of the
equation of the line written as: Ax=By= C.
y-y1=y2-y1/x2-x1 (x-x1)
EXAMPLE #1:
y-8=4-8/3-5 (x-5)
y-8= -4/-2 (x-5)
y-8= 2(x-5) Lowest term.
y-8= 2x-10 Distributive property.
y-y1=m(x-x1)
EXAMPLE:
y=2/3x + 5
y=2/3x + 5
3[y=2/3x + 5]3 Multiply both sides by 3.
3y=2x + 15
-2x +3y= 15
Answer:
x/2 + y/3= 1
THE END.
