PERSPECTIVE AND PARTICIPATION OF CATHOLIC VOTERS OF DISTRICT VI OF THE CITY OF MANILA • In the extent of corruption and government anomalies during President Benigno Aquino III administration, the Archdiocese of Manila launched Huwag Kang Magnakaw campaign in 2014 with the hope to encourage Filipinos to stop the culture of greed and all forms of corruption. • Archdiocese of Manila also launched Huwag Kang Papatay campaign under the administration of President Duterte which criticized the campaign against illegal drugs for allegedly violating the rule of law and the human rights of suspected individuals related to drug crimes. • Father Atilano Fajardo CM, Head of Public Affairs of the Archdiocese of Manila, is assigned by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle to promote the campaign in different parishes and catholic educational institutions which includes Adamson University. Statement of the Problem
The main objective of the study is to assess the role of
Archdiocese of Manila’s advocacies in shaping the political perspective and political participation of Catholic registered voters under District VI of the City of Manila. 1. What is the role of Archdiocese of Manila’s advocacies in shaping the political perspective and participation of Catholic registered voters of District VI of the City of Manila? 2. How do these advocacies affect the political perspective and participation of Catholic registered voters of District VI of the City of Manila? 3. What are the responses of the people regarding Huwag Kang Magnakaw and Huwag Kang Papatay campaign? 4. What are the problems encountered by Catholic registered voters in relation to Archdiocese of Manila’s campaign and by Archdiocese of Manila in executing the said campaigns? 5. What are the suggestions given by the respondents and implementors to improve the implementation of the said campaigns? Significance of the Study • This study will help the academe in understanding the basic knowledge about the role of Archdiocese of Manila’s campaign in shaping the political perspective and participation of registered Catholic voters.
• For parishioners of Archdiocese of Manila, this study will explain the
motives that give inspiration for Archdiocese of Manila to launch these campaigns. This may give way to open their minds regarding social issues like graft and corruption and extrajudicial killings and eventually promote political awareness. • This study will also help the Archdiocese of Manila and other religious organizations and institutions in formulating new set of ideas and policies that may convince the society for change. This study will give recommendations on how people can be convinced to support Church advocacies and campaigns. • For aspiring electoral candidates, this study may give them an idea on how the advocacies of Archdiocese of Manila can shape the political participation and perspective of voters especially during electoral campaign and the election itself. As a result, this may improve and enhance their campaign strategy to get the support and votes from the voters. • Lastly, this will also help future researchers in expanding their information and may also serve as reference for their respective studies. This may broaden knowledge of future researchers’ regarding voters perspective and participation, campaigns of Archdiocese of Manila and most importantly its connection with each other. METHOD OF ANALYSIS
The researchers will be analyzing the answers that the
respondents will be giving thematically which the researchers will be separating in accordance with the common and uncommon answers as well as the positive and negative opinions that the respondents will be giving. For every research question, researchers created big themes and small themes with description under it. This is to simplify the process and to come with conclusion and synthesis easily. CONCLUSION 1. What is the role of Archdiocese of Manila’s advocacies in shaping the political perspective and participation of Catholic registered voters of District VI of the City of Manila? It brings political and social awareness hence it subsequently affect the political perspective and participation of registered Catholic voters. It also serves as guideline of voters on who to vote during election. 2. How do these advocacies affect the political perspective and participation of Catholic registered voters of District VI of the City of Manila? Because they have high respect and trust to the church the respondents are confident that what the church says is only for the common good of the society. It is through these advocacies why they become more aware about the issue of corruption and extrajudicial killings, through these campaigns, it subsequently affect their political perspective and participation believing that it is for their common good. 3. What are the responses of the people regarding Huwag Kang Magnakaw and Huwag Kang Papatay campaign? Respondents are glad because Archdiocese of Manila is making an action to the issue of corruption and killings. However, they are not in favor of the church’s too much intervention with the government campaign and policies. Researchers found out that as long as the church interferes to the government, there is a high possibility that people will not follow them. 4. What are the problems encountered by Catholic registered voters in relation to Archdiocese of Manila’s campaign and by Archdiocese of Manila in executing the said campaigns? The main problem being faced by the implementors is the criticisms to the advocacy. However, the respondents problem with the implementation is the intervention of the church to the state, stating the principle of separation of the church and the state. 5. What are the suggestions given by the respondents and implementors to improve the implementation of the said campaigns? Focus more on bible teachings, have daily advertisement in television, radio and social media, reach the remote areas, house to house implementation and avoid too much intervention in the government policies. RECOMMENDATION Researchers recommendation to Archdiocese of Manila which implemented the said campaigns, is to continue their advocacy which brings awareness to citizens. Based on the gathered data, it is the church who serves as the guide of the voters not only in choosing a particular candidate to vote but also in avoiding committing unlawful acts which is not only against the law of the land but also in God’s teachings. The church should also make ways for youth to adapt their campaigns. The church can use social media considering that youths are attracted with advertisements found in Facebook or Twitter.
