BIOTECHNOLOGY
(bīōtekˈnäləjē)
 The exploitation of biological processes for industrial and other
purposes, especially the genetic manipulation of
microorganisms for the production of antibiotics, hormones,
etc.
 Use of living systems and organisms to develop or make
products, or "any technological application that uses biological
systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof, to make or
modify products or processes for specific use.
 Application of biological concepts and systems to make
products beneficial to man.
IMPORTANCE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

 Because of the advancement of thorough researched and development,

the importance of biotechnology has come to existence. It is a field in
biology that is extensively used in engineering, medicine, science and
technology, agriculture and other valuable form of applications.
Biotechnology can be a great solution to mankind struggles.
 Broadly biotechnology can be divided into two major branches:
 Non-gene biotechnology– deals with whole cell, tissues or even
individual organisms
 Gene biotechnology– involves gene manipulation, cloning, etc.
SUBFIELDS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

-Red biotechnology -Biotechnology applied to medical processes.

-White biotechnology - Biotechnology applied to industrial processes. White biotechnology tends to

consume less in resources than traditional processes when used to produce industrial goods.

-Green biotechnology - Biotechnology applied to agricultural processes.

-Bioinformatics - An interdisciplinary field which addresses biological problems using computational

techniques

-Blue technology. The term blue biotechnology has also been used to describe the marine and
aquatic applications of biotechnology, but its use is relatively rare.
 BIOTECHNOLOGY is used in:

 Businesses

-Selling of modified products. (cheese, bread , milk, etc.)

-Mostly, it gives the farmers an easier way of fertilizing or cultivating
crops. Through biotech, fertilizers that are safe to plants are created.
Pharmaceutical businesses are one of the most affected when it comes
to biotechnology. It enhanced medicine and its effects.
 Agriculture

-Genetic engineering, tissue culture, vaccines applied on plants and

animals.
-Highly affects farmers and sellers of crop products. Biotechnology gave
the farmers fertilizers that are more efficient and safe than the previous
products. On the part of the sellers, biotechnology enabled the control
of the ripening and made the freshness of the product last longer.
 Bioremediation(breaking down of environmental pollutants)

-Land farming. When a land is contaminated by gas or petroleum, land

farming is used to return it to its original state.

-Biotechnology provided biosensors that senses the target molecule

easily. Which made it easier to degrade or eliminate contaminant.
 Food

-Control of ripening and endurance of fruits and vegetables and even

meat. Even though foods are injected by chemicals, the amazing part
here is that it is not harmful to humans.

-Biotechnology made our food more resistant to rotting components

even when exposed.

-Biotechnology helped mimic the taste of the real food to make an

artificial one. (juices, biscuits, canned goods, etc.)
 Medicine and
 Pharmaceuticals

-With modern biotechnology, these genes can be used as targets for the
development of effective new therapies, which could significantly shorten the drug
discovery process to produce Better vaccines. Safer vaccines can be designed and
produced by organisms transformed by means of genetic engineering.
-A biotech pharmaceutical is simply any medically useful drug whose manufacture
involves microorganisms or substances that living organisms produce. Most biotech
pharmaceuticals are recombinant—that is, produced by genetic engineering.
-Insulin was among the earliest recombinant drugs. Insulin is needed by the human
body to maintain blood sugar. With the help of Biotechnology, insulin can now be
produced without use of live animals. (cows, and pigs)
