WHAT IS NOX ?
á NOx is the generic term for a group of highly
reactive gases, all of which contain nitrogen and
oxygen in varying amounts
á Many of the nitrogen oxides are colorless and
odorless.
á However nitrogen dioxide (NO2) along with
particles in the air can often be seen as a reddish-
brown layer over many urban areas
HOW DOES IT FORM?
á Nitrogen oxides form when fuel is burned at high
temperatures, as in a combustion process.

á The primary sources of NOx are motor vehicles,

electric utilities, and other industrial,
commercial, and residential sources that burn
fuels
NOX FROM POWER PLANT
á From the 25 million tons of NOx discharged
annually in the U.S., 21 percent of that amount is
generated by power plants alone.

á This results in a rising threat to the health of

citizens.
WHY IS NOX A THREAT?
á Nitrogen oxides play a major role in the
formation of ground-level ozone (or smog) in the
summertime.

á NOx also contributes to fine particulate matter

which is linked to a number of serious health
effects, including premature deaths.
HAZARDOUS EFFECT OF NOX
á NOx reacts to form nitrate particles, acid
aerosols, as well as NO2, which also cause
respiratory problems.
á Contributes to formation of acid rain.

á Contributes to nutrient overload that

deteriorates water quality.
á Reacts to form toxic chemicals.

á Contributes to global warming.

CONTROL OF NOX
ß There are various processes which are taken to
control Nox pollution««.

á Catalytic converter
á Exhaust gas recirculati

á Selective non-catalytic reduction

á Wet scrubber
CATALYTIC CONVERTER
á It is a device used to reduce toxicity of emissions
from IC engine.
á It provides an environment for a chemical
reaction wherein toxic combustion by-products
are converted to less-toxic substances.
á It is commonly used in motor vehicle exhaust
system
EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION
á It is a NOx reduction technique used in petrol
and diesel engine.

á It works by recirculating a portion of an

engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders.
SELECTIVE NON-CATALYTIC
REDUCTION
á It is a method to lessen nitrogen oxide emissions
in conventional power plants that
burn biomass, waste and coal.
á In this process ammonia or urea is injected into
the firebox of the boiler to react nitrogen oxide
formed in the combustion process.
á Resulting product of this process is elemental
nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water.
WET SCRUBBER
á In a wet scrubber, the polluted gas stream which
contain NOx is brought into contact with the
scrubbing liquid, by spraying it with the liquid so
as to remove the pollutants.

á It remove pollutant gases by absorbing or

dissolving them into the liquid.

á It also contain mist eliminator which removes

droplets that are in the inlet of scrubber.
