VEHICULAR TRAFFIC AND
PARKING AT AIRPORTS

 Access roads are planned to provide fast connections

between the airport and the city

 One of the disadvantage of the air travel is that the time

saved through air travel is lost in ground transportation

 Broadly the vehicular traffic is classified as Passengers,

Visitors and Service Personal

 The area closet at the terminal Building entrance may be
used for short time parking for enplanning and deplanning
of Passengers

 Sufficient space is provided for passenger cars, adjacent

to the entrance of the terminal building for loading and
unloading of passengers without congestion and delay

 Separate parking should be provided for the Staff

VEHICULAR TRAFFIC AND
PARKING AT AIRPORTS
 For the most efficient airport vehicular circulation and parking
system , the following points are considered:
Ease of passengers unloading and loading at the terminal
building
One way traffic wherever possible
A minimum of driveway intersection
Adequate driveway width to permit overtaking
Sufficiently and clearly defined parking and circulation
routes
Well lighted routes for pedestrian's and vehicles
 FAA (FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION) suggests that the size
of public parking facility should be based on 1.5 to 2 cars for
each peak hour passenger
VEHICULAR TRAFFIC AND
PARKING AT AIRPORTS
 Most large airports provide separate parking facilities for
passengers and visitors, employees, and rental car storage ,
Where as In smaller airports these facilities may be combined
in one physical location
 Passenger and visitor parking are often segregated into short-
term, long-term, and remote parking facilities
 Those parking facilities most convenient to the terminal are
designated as short term and a premium rate is charged for
their use.
 Long-term parking is usually near the main terminal complex,
but not as convenient as short term, and rates are usually
discounted for long-term users.

 Short-term parkers are normally classified as those which

park for 3 h or less and these may account for about 80
percent of the parkers at an airport.
 These short-term parkers account for only 15 to 20
percent of the accumulation of vehicles in the parking
facility .
 The range of public parking spaces provided at existing
airports varies from 1000 to 3000 per million originating
passengers.

• Preliminary planning estimates of the number of parking spaces required at
an airport may be obtained from Fig.

 It is recommended, that the range for preliminary planning be
established between 1000 and 1400 parking spaces per million
originating passengers.
 Parking revenue collection points at parking facility exits
process from 150 to 200 vehicles per hour per position.
 In parking garages, the capacity of ramps leading from one
level to another is important during peak periods
 One-way straight ramps can accommodate about 750 vehicles
per hour.
 A reduction in the order of 20 percent should be considered
when two-way ramps are utilized.

 Circular or helical ramps, often used for egress from parking facilities,
accommodate about 600 vehicles per hour in one direction.
 Different types of parking
 Airport park and ride – the most parking services at airports
 Valet airport parking – removes the need for you to park your
Car / Vehicle
 On-airport parking – parking is done within the airport boundary
 Off airport parking – parking done outside the airport boundary
 Holiday airport parking- for customers travelling during the busy
holiday periods
 Business travellers – parking options across top airport locations
perfect for the business traveller
